O’Loughlin Gaels GAA
It was another busy weekend for the clubs Juvenile section as St. Johns Park played host to clubs from Co. Clare prior to the Kilkenny v Clare NHL Rd 5 fixture at Nowlan Park. U10s , u12s and u16s went about their hurling business in an efficient manner up against the challenges of three of Clare’s finest. The first of the buses to arrive brought the young players and supporters from Wolftones Gaa club of Shannon. Two u10s teams and two u12s teams took to the sun drenched pitches in what was a perfect day for hurling. The u10s from both O’Loughlins Gaa and Wolftones GAA set the tone for the day by providing a spectacle that surely must have been inspired by the madness of the previous days six-nations rugby. It was frenetic with the sliotar travelling from one end of the pitch to the other via a frenzy of challenges, ground strokes, solos and out of hand clearances. Scores were abundant and the supporters gathered certainly enjoyed the youngsters synergy of passion and skill. There was everything..blood, sweat and tears (and that was just the coach). Both clubs certainly will be satisfied that the future is bright. The second groups to compete were the u12s of O’Loughlin Gaels, Wolftones GAA and Doora Barefield GAA. This was a pact schedule with a total of nine games played. Each club providing two teams that played three games each. Intense stuff on such a sunny morning. Energy sapping for sure but every young player gave 100% commitment to their cause. There were excellent games with Doora Barefield probably edging it with the overall results. Nothing was easy for either team though, nor would you want it to be, and there was some tough challenges throughout the mornings fare. High scoring stuff provided good value for those who lined out along the sidelines with their good value Barista Coffees in hand provided by the ever popular Camogie Café. On the back pitch our u16s faced up to the challenge of their counterparts from Kilmaley GAA. Hard hits, silken skills and top class scores cetainly whetted the appetite of the on looking support as the time neared for the NHL tie in Nowlan Park. Our boys proved too strong for the Clare lads as a number of the O’Loughlins contingent stepped up to the plate having been given their chance. Brian Dowling and his team will be satisfied with what they saw as they prepare for the summer ahead. If all that wasn’t enough our u6s managed to find space to train out in the sunshine for their first outdoor session of the year. It certainly was great sight to see all the pitches full with competitive action as young players enjoyed their hurling as it should be. As always our visiting friends were invited to the gym for the customary O’Loughlin Gaels hospitality where teas, sandwiches buns and biscuits were eagerly consumed while the banner banter was building for the big game. (Well done to our own Mark Kelly by the way for another fine contribution to Kilkenny’s quelling of said banter!) Good work yet again by the O’Loughlin Gaels juvenile section! www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie O’Loughlin Gaels / St. Johns all conquering St. Patricks Day parade. Our young Gaels’ excellent involvement in the St. Patricks Day Parade has earned them an award for ‘Best Parish Entry’. Well deserved too as the youngsters really bought into the occasion and it showed as they enjoyed every step of it while they marched proudly through Kilkenny’s streets. Last year the club won ‘Best Sports Club Entry’ and this is the third such award in recent years. Well done to organiser Stephen McCormack who has it down to a fine art for sure and to all the young player from our GAA and Camogie Clubs who took part. Maith sibh go leir. For a full report on the clubs entry go to www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie/events/st-patrick-day-parade Handball Honours Congratulations to Kirk Green who has won the Intermediate Handball County Title. Kirk is also the current All Army All-Ireland Champion so is certainly showing good form. Well done too to Edel Mulholland who became Leinster Schoolgirls Champion recently. It’s well deserved as we all know Edel works hard at her craft. Our handballers always have a good tradition of representing O’Loughlin Gaels well so well done to Kirk, Edel and everybody in O’Loughlin Gaels Handball. U8s & u10s Gaelic Football Last week we noted the eminent restart of Gaelic Football for u8s and u10s which returns on Tuesday, March 31st at 6.30pm and every Tuesday. In preparation for this a pre-season u10 warm up game was held last Wednesday evening against James Stephens GAA in their grounds at Nuncio Road. Arguably the best football I’ve ever seen on a Kilkenny club pitch the young lads from both clubs showed there’s an appetite for the game in Kilkenny. Kick passing, handpassing, blocks and freetaking were skills abundantly displayed. There was great excitement too as the young Gaels played out their first ever floodlit game. Thanks to our hosts James Stephens for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Club Lotto There was no jackpot winner of this week’s club lotto. The numbers drawn were 1, 12, 23, 25 and the bonus number was: 7. Tickets can be bought from the usual selling agents or by asking at the clubhouse bar. Remember – if you’re not in; you can’t win the jackpot prize of €20,000. Best of luck Registration & Membership The deadline for player registration is fast approaching. It is so important for all players to complete and return their registration forms to club registrar Geraldine Kelly or Secretary Margaret Hanlon or indeed your team’s manager. March 31st is the final date for returns and players must do it in order to avail of the cover provided by the GAA Player Injury Scheme. “The Continent” Anyone interested in the History of St. Johns Parish and the origins of the reference to St. Johns as ‘The Continent’ would serve their time well by heading to Rothe House on Wednesday Evening March 25th at 8pm for a talk by local Archaeologist and Historian Coilin O’Drisceoil on the History and Archaeology of St. Johns Parish. O’Loughlin Gaels GAA
U8s played host to Maynooth GAA on Sunday morning at St. Johns Park. A bus load of players and parents came and enjoyed plenty of hurling action played out by underage players from both clubs. All the skills were evident, rising, striking. Solo runs, sidelines cuts and tackling were the order of the day and all in good spirits. The beautiful spring weather certainly helped the occasion and the proceedings were overseen by one ‘Liam McCarthy’. The aforementioned ‘Liam McCarthy’ was very much in demand for photographs by the youngsters from both clubs who were equally enthralled by its presence. It was an excellent morning with families mingling afterwards over sandwiches and teas provided by the always hospitable O’Loughlin Gaels Members before our happy guests returned to Maynooth having had a good days experience. The Juvenile Section continues to provide more action for our young Gaels next week when on Sunday morning the club plays host to Wolftones GAA of Shannon and Doora Barefield GAA of Ennis in a series of u10 and u12 games. We look forward to the visit and more importantly we anticipate another lively and fun Sunday Morning at St. Johns Park. Our Clare friends are of course going to stay around O’Loughlin GAA club for certainly a little banter and probably a few predictions on the Clare v Kilkenny NHL match in Nowlan Park later in the afternoon. www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie Gaelic Football Unfortunately our Senior Footballers exited from this year’s Championship following their defeat to a dominant Mooncoin side last weekend. The lads would be disappointed as their earlier performances had presented some good footballing promise. The players return to the training fields again now and prepare themselves for the upcoming hurling leagues. U8s & u10s Gaelic Football Gaelic Football for u8s and u10s returns on Tuesday , March 31st at 6.30pm and every Tuesday. Don’t worry if your registered and already training on Sunday Mornings you don’t need to register again. All you’ll need to remember is a Gumshield. We had great fun last year and plenty of different faces came to enjoy the o’Loughlins facilities. We’re looking forward to a few games too throughout the Summer. Club Lotto There was no jackpot winner of this week’s club lotto. The numbers drawn were 8, 10, 16, 22 and the bonus number was: 18. Tickets can be bought from the usual selling agents or by asking at the clubhouse bar. Remember – if you’re not in; you can’t win the jackpot prize of €20,000. Best of luck St. Patricks Day Our young stars of the future took to the streets yesterday (St. Patricks Day) in the annual St. Patricks Day Parade. There was plenty of colour and noise and demonstrations of our proud youngsters Hurling, Football and Camogie skills. There are plenty of pictures and reports on the clubs website and facebook pages. Registration & Membership The deadline for player registration is fast approaching. It is so important for all players to complete and return their registration forms to club registrar Geraldine Kelly or Secretary Margaret Hanlon or indeed your team’s manager. March 31st is the final date for returns and players must do it in order to avail of the cover provided by the GAA Player Injury Scheme. Reminder of ‘Review of Holy Week in The Parish’ “The Easter Triduum ceremonies (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) are central in the Church's calendar. In most Parishes, the Easter Triduum is celebrated by parishioners assembled in the parish church only. Having regard to the to the falling numbers attending the Holy Week Ceremonies in our three Churches, the following arrangements will apply from Easter 2015: The full Easter Triduum will be celebrated in St John's Church only. The Stations of the Cross – in all three Churches on Good Friday. The Easter Sunday Celebrations – in all three churches as normal. Much consideration has been given to this decision, and we regret that circumstances have forced us into making these new arrangements. We trust that we have your understanding and support in our deliberations.” O’Loughlin Gaels GAA
It may seem like there’s a lull at O’Loughlin Gaels GAA these days while the competition fixtures scheduling is quiet as the season commences, but St. Johns Park is a hive of activity as teams of both genders and all grades busily prepare for Summer action. Teams of mentors and club officers are busy organising and readying the grounds for a busy summer. Team Managers are already jostling, grappling and shouldering each other as they compete for space for their teams so they can offer the best advantages for all players. Not an issue, space maybe at a premium but a well organised Grounds Committee insures that all teams avail of the best pitches available. Supporters and members enjoy loitering for a chat around the club house each evening as teams of all ages are being put through their paces. Talks of the team’s prospects for the season are rife and the banter is getting lively. Juvenile training continue on Saturday mornings for camogie and Sunday mornings for the boys. The introduction of the Camogie Café has contributed to the enjoyment the parents get from viewing the young Gaels play. Great work by all the volunteers and we know the hard work now will make for a great season ahead. New member are welcome always. www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie Club Facilities. Everyone is welcome to visit and support this event ANDY O’DRISCOLL of O’Loughlin Gaels. An appreciation.
All of us at O’Loughlin Gaels were saddened to learn of the passing on Sunday morning, Feb 23rd, of our dear friend and clubman, Andy O’Driscoll and we extend sincere sympathies to his wife Biddy, sons Anthony, Ollie and Dan, daughters Christine and Patricia and to all their extended family members. At this difficult time for all, we remember Andy dearly and acknowledge a life dedicated to faith, family, work and community. A good Christian, he was immensely proud of all his family and cared deeply about their welfare, their careers and their achievements. Originally from Harristown in South Kilkenny, Andy joined the Army, and served in The Curragh, Clonmel and Kilkenny where, having married Biddy, he then settled. He hurled on army teams, was proud of the force and never lost his contact with James Stephen’s Barracks. When he left the army he worked as a driver with Kilkenny Co.Council before leaving to run his chip van business. His van, parked at The Parade at weekends became one of Kilkenny’s noted landmarks and one of its most welcome features for many a visitor. At Nowlan Park on Sunday afternoons, it vied with the games for popularity with many a youngster and punters at Point to Point meetings all around the South East certainly appreciated its presence. He gave his time selflessly to community charitable work with St. Vincent de Paul and Meals on Wheels and he served on various Parish Committees. All of us at O’Loughlin Gaels will have our own special memories of him and those of us who had the privilege of knowing him over the lifetime of the Club, will have every reason to appreciate his huge contribution to its formation, development and achievements. At a time when the club was in its infancy, he helped shape its destiny and willingly gave his time, energy and enthusiasm to whatever needed to be done. And so too did Biddy as one of the original Ladies Committee. Andy chaired the sub-committee which oversaw the renovation of St. John’s Park in the mid ‘70s and later with his good friend, the late Joe Maher, as grounds men, they helped transform it into one of the best pitches in the county. It was in this capacity that he served on the Club Executive for many years. We remember him for his attention to detail. If something needed to be done, or was worth doing, it should be done well. No half measures, no cutting corners, no slip shod methods. ‘Twill do wouldn’t do. He detested sloppiness in any club activity and his engaging personality in seeing things through enlivened many a meeting and conversation. Latterly, and even when his health was partly in decline, he continued to play an astonishing role at fund raising. He continued to take an active interest in all club affairs and to be proud of all its endeavours, its achievements and not least, his own family’s involvement on the playing fields and behind the scenes. Such was the man that he would not have seen himself as anyone special in the club. He wouldn’t have looked for attention, he was not motivated by personal gain or selfish ambition. He would have seen himself as just another doing some of the countless, unseen and often unremembered tasks required of all of us to help run his local GAA club. We would all have been influenced by what he said, what he did, what he was. We are privileged to have known him and to have shared part of his very generous life. I had the privilege of taking him on one of his last visits to the club to view a scene that he above all, I thought, would surely relish. On a fine evening in early Summer when the club was a veritable hive of activity and every square yard of space on three pitches was occupied by players and mentors of all ages, he took time to look around. People were milling around, both handball alleys were in full swing and the gym was alive with basketball activity. Lotto promoters, various sub committees and bar staff were beginning to assemble and from the clubrooms above our heads we listened to the haunting sounds of our Tuesday night choir. Under an evening sun, with flags flying high, grass looking greener than ever and clubhouse in pristine shape you could sense his feelings rise and his pride in all now involved in running the club. And in the simple, direct language which typified the man, but covered everything, I heard him say ‘you know, we must have done something right’. You did, Andy, and your legacy lives on. God rest your gentle soul. O’LOUGHLIN GAELS GAA CLUB Eamonn Doyle, President O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club Camogie News
There was a large turn out on Saturday morning for the return to training of the O’Loughlin Gaels Camogie Juvenile Section. Over 100 young girls from u6 to u12s swarmed the St. Johns Park pitches under the stewardship of the hard working Camogie coaches. Newcomers and ‘veterans’ enjoyed the morning with some girls expressing their disappointment at having to wait a whole week to the next training session. Well not to worry - training for juvenile camogie will continue each and every Saturday at 10.30am and new members are welcome anytime. The many parents who gathered enjoyed the morning’s activities and were able to relax with some hot coffee varieties from the new Camogie Café. A welcome innovation set up by the camogie executive. Next week sees the return of the u14s and u16s camogie as they resume training on Monday the 9th and Wednesday the 11th at 6.30pm. www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie Gaelic Football The O’Loughlin Gaels senior team ran out impressive winners over Clara GAA in the first round of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Senior Football Championship. The scoreline of 3-14 to 0-5 is even more impressive considering the weather conditions presented on Sunday morning. The lads prepare now for round 2 The Big Tree Clearout. Saturday morning and right through the afternoon saw plenty of activity around the O’Loughlin Gaels Club. Development Chairman Coleman Loughnane and his band of merry men were busy felling and transporting hundreds of Silver Birch to new homes. The space is been cleared and made available to continue to improve the facilities at the club. Coleman is forever working new ways to make the place better to the benefit of all O’Loughlin Gaels’ members and the club is indebted to him. All Coleman asks for is a new pair of working gloves so that he can keep on going in the name of the St. Johns Club. The good news is that the trees have found new homes and are been repatriated in avenues, gardens and public grounds throughout. Club Lotto There was no jackpot winner of this week’s club lotto. The numbers drawn were 4, 14, 20, 28 and the bonus number was: 06. Tickets can be bought from the usual selling agents or by asking at the clubhouse bar.
