U16’s Triumph in Cork

The u16 hurlers had a great victory in Cork on Saturday in the Na Piarsaigh Gaa tournament. There were four teams involved - Na Piarsaigh, De La Salle, KIlmacud Crokes and O Loughlins. The lads won the first two games easily enough, which set them up for a final against the hosts Na Piarsaigh. The 3rd group game was cancelled and they played the final 30 minutes aside instead. The game was brilliant, great scores, hooking, blocking, intensity all the way through. The first half was very tough, Na Piarsaigh were on top and raced into an early lead. Sean Bolger was the best forward on view all day and  scored a fantastic goal to keep O Loughlin's in touch. The final score of the half came from the stick of Robbie O Driscoll from the sideline. Half time score was 3-3 to 1-4.
Nobody could have predicted what was about to unfold in the second half. Jordan Molloy was moved to full back where he completely stopped the Na Piarsaigh's main player. Shane Mahony took over at centre back, scoring one superb inspirational point.  The big turning point was a goal from the energetic and hard working Tervine Wallace. Ronan Buckley now at full forward was causing hovoc inside and setting up chances for team mates. John Delaney was moved from corner back to centre forward and was very effective.
More goals followed from super sub Eoin Neary, and Adam Power. The lads held on for a deserved 3 point victory on a scoreline of 4-12 to 3-12. It was a superb second half performance, one which will be hopefully repeated later on in the year. Man of the match was Charlie Deegan who gave a superb display at corner back and playing the sweeper role. The Micky Coade Memorial cup was presented to team captain Shane Mahony afterwards. Team for the final was as follows: Steven Scallon, Eoin Kelly, John Delaney, Charlie Deegan, Peter Collins, Shane Mahony, Jordan Molloy, Ryan Poyntz, Ronan Buckley, Adam Power, Tervine Wallace, Robbie O Driscoll, Eoin O Shea, Sean Bolger, Kevin Murphy. Subs: Eoin Neary, Joe Banville, Padraig Nolan, Luke Freyne.

Feile

Well done to our U14’s who battled bravely in Littleton (near Thurles) last Saturday. Maurice Nolan’s men won two of their three games, before going down eventually to a strong Kilmacud Crokes outfit. It’ll stand to you in the long run boys. Keep playing, practicing and good things will happen.

The Trip to Tullamore

Who says kids aren’t looked after in this modern age of Playstations and X-Boxes?  Twenty six eleven and twelve year old boys from St John’s Parish were given the VIP treatment last Sunday when brought to Tullamore for the big match. A Garda pass (courtesy of Nigel Leydon – he’s well in there!) sped us through Offaly’s capital, where we were greeted by officials from Tullamore CLCG who were on hand to make sure we wanted for nothing. It wasn’t long thereafter that our boys were on the pitch giving every bit as good as they were got. Two concurrent matches were held side by side. The Tullamore boys were big and strong (is there an Offaly revival in the air?) but that never stopped the continent before! Onwards we marched (having been sated with sandwiches from Heaven) across the road to the stadium to be treated to one of the games of a season that is only just beginning! Mark Kelly’s second half take (under extreme pressure) and release to Colin Fennelly, set up what looked to be the pivotal goal of the game. Who could have guessed what was about to happen? These are great days of Summer boys – remember them, because before you know it – Summer will be over. The U12’s squad in Tullamore was as follows:  Jason Delaney, James Phelan, Damien Dowling, Jack Clifford, Daniel Walsh, Chase Leefar, Morgan Leefar, Mikey Ibrahim, Josh Nolan, Matthew Hogan, Joe Brennan, Alex Molloy, Sean Lawlor, Ben Kinchella, Mikey Wallace, John MacNamara, Aidan Kenny, James McKinley, John McKinley, Ronan Lavelle, Jake Hickey, Eric Walsh, Vincent O’Grady, Harry O’Grady, Nicholas Mullins, Sam O’Connell & Joseph Leydon. Special mention should also go to Joey Byrne, who lined out for Kilkenny as part of the half-time interval game. Joey is a member of our U14’s squad.

Special Juniors!

O'Loughlin Gaels put in a super display to win the All County Junior Hurling League Final in Thomastown against a very sporting Graiguenamanagh. It was the classic game of two halves with O'Loughlins leading comfortably at half time 3 - 3 to 0 -4. Despite this strong period from the O'Loughlins side there were plenty of goal chances went a begging. On occasions it would have made the task more comfortable if some of these chances had been converted to points scored. That is in no way to deny the super stop saving ability of the Graiguenamanagh keeper. In that first period forward displays by Paddy Cantwell, Alan Geoghegan and Danny Lenehan were praise worthy. There was also strong mid field performances from Brian Dowling and Martin Gibbons. However after the turn around it was a whole different story. Graiguenamanagh found the form that brought them to this final. They tacked on point after point as they raised their game and made a super match of things. This reversal of form required some super back play from the O'Loughlins stalwarts such as Captain Brian Murphy, Stephen Tyrrell and a gutsy display at Centre Back from Rick Leydon. Eventually in a tense thrilling end of game period O'Loughlin found the score sheets on sufficient occasions to win by the narrowest of margins. A special word of thanks goes to the team management of Philly Holohan, Paul Phelan and Phil Comerford and their back room team. For our young players this was a hugely important win and we look forward to their ongoing development as the season develops. Well done again to also concerned.

Full Time:  O’Loughlin Gaels 3-07, Graiguenamanagh 0-15

Special Olympics

O'Loughlin Gaels would like to congratulate juvenile member - Niall Kenny, who won an All-Ireland Silver medal in the Special Olympics at the weekend. The event was staged in the magnificent sporting campus that is University of Limerick. Huge crowds attended over three days & it's fair to say it really was a remarkably special event. Niall claimed silver in the 25m sprint. The other Kilkenny athletes who represented Team Leinster also brought home a veritable rainbow of medals! Well done to all.

Special Camogie Girls

The Under 10's performed excellently at the Young Irelands Blitz held last Saturday the 7th of July. In the first 2 games the girls in green and white netted 12 goals amongst 7 players. It was great to see that no matter what position players were in, the team were able to play well and keep the scoreboard ticking over. What was even more impressive was that with no subs, the same 10 girls kept going for the 3 matches. In the last game of the day, the teams were evenly matched and unfortunately only one goal separated the sides and that was not in our favour. Grace Sheridan was top goal scorer with a total of 5 goals and the other goals were scored by Emma Flyson White, Leah Hanrahan , Ava Vaughan, Maebh Richardson, Tara O'Keeffe and Abby Ware. Ríona Crowley was a nuisance in midfield and made some lovely clearances. Faye Fennelly cleared any ball that got up near our goal and also worked tirelessly in around the pitch. Eva Prendergast is making massive improvements from game to game and striking the ball well on the ground. Overall, the team had a great day winning 2 of the 3 matches.

U-10 Camogie V St Brigids

The O'loughlins Under 10's played their first home game of the season on Wednesday the 28th of May. Unlike their first outing, this game was more one sided and unfortunately, not in our favour. St. Brigids were very strong and had a large panel which meant that they never tired on the warm evening. Despite great efforts in defence by Abby Ware, Grace Sheridan and Faye Fennelly, St. Brigids got scores on the board early on. Maebh Richardson had a great game and relieved a lot of pressure many times by sending the ball into the forwards.  Ava Vaughan and Riona Crowley had a lot of work to do to keep up with the girls in blue in the centre and they did well. Eva Prendergast battled well in the second half, as did Ava O'Grady and Tara O'Keeffe. Emma Flyson White did very well in attack and defence. Sinead Dowling and newcomer Sara Ayoup along with Riona very nearly got a score in the 2nd half. Even though the scoreline didn't suit the girls in green, it was good preparation for our upcoming blitz in Young Irelands.

Give Tullamore Their Due

The Tullamore U12’s travelled in numbers on Saturday last to take on O’Loughlin Gaels in a challenge, before heading to Nowlan Park for the big game. Credit is due to the Offaly boys who put in a great shift against our boys. This reporter was heartened to see the amount of honest endeavour that was on display from both clubs. What was of particular note was the degree to which Tullamore & OLG played the game in the right spirit. Players threw themselves into the tackle without fear or favour and there was not a word of dissent from any quarter. This surely bodes well for a return visit in the near future to the Faithful County. The following is a list of the players who lined out for the Continent on Saturday:  John Comerford , Jason Delaney , Michael Ibraham , Ben Kinchella , Nick Mullins , Josh Nolan, Cillian Larkin , Damian Dowling , Harry Bland , Luke Hennessy , Greg Edogun , Aidan Kenny , Jake Hickey , Chase Leefarr , John McNamara , Joe Leydon , Alex Molloy , Ronan Lavelle , Sam O'Connell , James Phelan , Daniel Walsh , Vincent O'Grady , Joe Brennan , Mikey Wallace ,  Declan Murphy , Tony Marquez , Mateusz Zych , Clinton Morris , Eric Walsh , Josh Culleton , Jack Clifford , Matthew Hogan , Robbie Kenny

Summer Camp

The O’Loughlin Gaels Summer Camp will take place again this summer for two weeks in August. This is the sixth year of the camp and it continues to grow in popularity each year, with 160 children taking part over the two weeks last summer.

The key words associated with the camp are fun, enjoyment, participation and skill development. Niall Bergin and his team of qualified GAA coaches work hard each year to create and implement a diverse programme aimed at developing the basic skills of hurling/camogie, gaelic football, rounders and handball in a fun-filled, friendly and energetic environment. Each morning the groups will work on developing the skills of each game through a range of drills and activities. In the afternoon the children will use these skills in mini-games where the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. An exciting part of each week for the children is always the visit of a number of inter-county hurling, camogie and football stars who chat to the children about skill development and lifestyle as well as posing for photos and signing numerous jerseys, hurls, helmets and even arms!!

·         The camp is open to all O’Loughlin Gaels club members, boys and girls aged 5-13 years.

·         Each child will receive a quality sports pack with O’Loughlin Gaels gear.

·         Camp begins at 10am with lunch from 12-12.30pm and finishes up at 2.30pm.

·         We are really lucky to have the use of such great facilities in St. John’s Park with three pitches, a wall ball, two handball alleys and an indoor hall – which saves us from the sometimes unpredictable Irish weather!!

·         The camp costs €60 per child for one week or €85 for two weeks. One sports pack per child included in this price.

·         The dates for this year’s camp are:

Week 1: Tuesday August 5th – Saturday August 9th

Week 2: Monday August 11th – Friday August 15th

Application forms are available from club underage management, in the clubhouse itself, Kearns butchers, JJ Cullen butchers, St. John’s Quay Library and on the club website www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie. Closing date for applications is Friday June 20th so get in early to avoid disappointment. Please note late applications cannot be guaranteed availability of sports pack.

Who Were They?

We got a fantastic response to our question as to who was that turn of the century team from way, way back in the day. Special thanks must go to John Joe Cullen (pork butcher) of John Street who kindly donated to the club – the original framed photograph. Thanks a million John Joe from all in OLG. At this stage, we have all the names of the people in the photo and are working on the back story of the people involved. We will report back when we know more. OLG would also like to thank Liam Rushe for his help.  The team incidentally was an early forerunner of O’Loughlin Gaels based in St John’s Parish known simply as O’Loughlins. Thanks is also due to Conor Denieffe, author of The Continent Abu.
