Club Legend

OLG legend Brian Hogan announced his retirement from Inter-County Hurling last week. Brian played and achieved to the highest of standards throughout his glittering career. His medals haul includes 8 Leinster SHC's, 7 All-Ireland SHC's and 2 All-Stars. Brian was also first up the steps to lift the Liam McCarthy Cup on behalf of his Club and County in 2011. But Brian played the game for more than just medals. His towering displays at centre back will mean he will stand out as one of the greats of the modern game for years to come. OLG would like to take this opportunity to wish Brian well on his retirement. We also look forward to seeing him lead by example in 2015.......when the St John's Park evenings begin to stretch once again.

U21 Championship

O'Loughlins 2-15 Lisdowney 0-09

A bright and calm, but cold, Jenkinstown was the venue for O'Loughlin Gaels u21A championship quarter final against Lisdowney on Sunday afternoon. The O'Loughlins boys, bouyed up no doubt by the Minors success a week earlier, came through this encounter successfully after a very stiff first half challenge from Lisdowney. In truth however O'Loughlins dominated much of the game and were worthy of their final scoring advantage.

Lisdowney started well going 2 points up after 4mins through their centre-forward and free taker Michael Kenny, who was probably Lisdowneys best player on the day. However good work from Daniel O'Connor and Ross Butler up front assisted Danny Lenihan in getting O'Loughlins first score on the 5th minute. This was quickly followed up by three quick scores from Daniel O'Connor whose workrate was telling and was proving to be a handful for the lisdowney defence. A goal and two points from Doc was quickly followed up by a well struck Shane Maher free earned by the industrious Davey Bourke. Lisdowney did get a point back when a shot on goal was superbly deflected over the bar by the very alert goalkeeping of Billy Leydon. O'Loughlins had by now got a firm grip on the game but Lisdowney freetaker Michael Kenny was keeping his team in with three more post splitting frees and a further point from play. However O'Loughlins dominance in midfield was proving to be the key factor of this first half. Fearghal Browne got himself on the score sheet and immediately from the puck out O'Loughlins intent was signalled by a superb catch from Davey Bourke who was hauled down by his marker for an O'Loughlins free. Quick thinking saw a short diagonal free aimed at Robbie Buckley who had cleverly ghosted to the wing and hit a superb point off his left to see O'Loughlins finish the half 1-08 to 0-07 in front.

The second half got underway with a blistering start from O'Loughlins with Ross Butler pointing and Daniel O'Conner reaping the maximum rewards by taking on the defence and hitting the net yet again. The writing was now on the wall after just two minutes of this second half. The dominance of O'Loughlins at midfield was further enhanced by 3 points from play by James Lenihan and 1 from Davey Bourke. Doc finished his total tally of 2-3 with a point before before the game was out. This was a good performance overall by O'Loughlins who move now to the semi-final stages of this competition with a good awareness of what they need to do to advance to the final.

O'Loughlins: Billy Leydon, Gary Bryan, Huw Lawlor, Shane Parsons, Vinny Wallace, Paddy Deegan, Robbie Buckley 0-1, James Lenihan 0-3, Davey Bourke 0-1, Ross Butler 0-1, Danny Lenihan 0-1, Fearghal Brennan 0-1, Shane Maher 0-4(fs), Daniel O'Connor 2-3, Danny Bolger. Sub's: D. O'Driscoll, Jack Lalor,  Cian Loy, Paul Denieffe,  Sheamie McGrath.

Management Team: Joe Nolan,Jimmy Comerford, Andy Comerford, Maurice Nolan, Paul Cleere.

U11’s & U12’s Year End Bash

Our OLG boys at U11 & U12 grade had their end of season bash on Saturday last. The boys piled into our newly refurbished Gymnasium to play indoor soccer (bring back the ban!) ably ref’d by Pat O’Grady (Coach) and Sean MacNamara.  Then followed a feast fit for kings, courtesy of Caesar’s Take Away. No less than multiple All-Ireland winner Andy Comerford was on hand to serve up Burgers, Chicken Nuggets, Snack Boxes and of course....buckets of chips to the ravenous mob!

Nigel Leydon (Manager) thanked the boys for their hard work and dedication over the years and wished them well on their graduation to the U14 ranks. Niall Bergin (Juvenile Chairman OLG) also thanked the players and their parents. The boys were then each presented with a gift back, courtesy of John O’Connell’s Haven Pharmacy.

The biggest treat of all though, was that three very special guests were on hand to do the presentations. Members of the victorious OLG Minor Championship winning team – Huw Lawlor (Captain), Ross Butler and Daniel (DOC) O’Connor took turns to shake the boys’ hands and wish them well. OLG would also like to take this opportunity to wish our U11’s & U12’s well for the future. We thank their parents for their dedication and look forward to seeing them grow from boys to men in the years to come.

Movember

November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month during which the biggest fundraising activity for the Irish Cancer Society's Action Prostate Cancer programme happens – and it’s called MOVEMBER.
Movember is a global, not-for-profit, charitable event, in which those involved (with the required neck and the upper lip)grow a moustache only to have it shaved off at the end of the month. Truly incredible!!
Anyway, if you’d like to support the Irish Cancer Society's Action Prostate Cancer Programme, you can sponsor our own “Fr Movember” himself by throwing him a few bob. And who knows, with a bit of luck, he might do us all a favour and get rid of it before the end of the month!

Johnswell Sale of Work

Johnswell Development Committee will hold their annual Sale of Work on Sunday November 30th in Johnswell hall at 2pm. The usual sideshows include wheel of fortune, cake sale, bottle stall, raffle, books and vegetables, followed by an auction for sticks, farm produce etc.

Please note due to technical difficulties with the KK People, last week's notes were not posted to that newspaper. This week's notes are similar to week ending 2nd Nov as a result but with minor modifications. Apologies for any inconvenience. OLG.

Battle of the Bolger

Jenkinstown was the wild, wet and windy venue on Saturday week last for the eagerly anticipated all city Roinn A M.H.C. semi-final between O’Loughlin Gaels and James Stephens. Scores were always going to be at a premium for both teams on what was a Dog Day Afternoon in Conahy.  But two vital points into the wind from wee Sean Bolger along with an opportunist strike from his older brother – Danny would be the first half platform for a memorable victory, for the St John’s Parish Boys.

The Village opened their account early with a close range Ray Lahart dead ball. This was quickly followed by a fine strike from Tadhg Dwyer to double their lead within the first five minutes.  The OLG defence however slowly started to gain the upper hand. Robbie Buckley put in a great block and would go on to give a MOTM display. Gary Bryan took up where he left off the previous week – leading by example.  Cian Loy in the middle of the field - did the spade work for what would turn out to be a crucial settling score. Loy made space for himself at top of the right and drove the ball across the parallelogram on the eighth minute, where Danny Bolger was on hand, to pull off his left and first-time the ball to the Village net. Cul!

Danny’s younger brother was keen to get in on the act. Twice, he made outstanding catches and twice, he struck off either side for two wonder points.  The Village were managing to stay in touch from frees but in the twenty fourth minute, Shane Maher rounded his man and headed for goal. His low hard strike off his right to the far left corner was sublime. Cul eile! Ray Lahart then converted two more frees at the death to keep the bare minimum between the teams at the interval.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 2-02, James Stephens 0-07

DOC was out in front of his man from the off and was fouled – Maher pointed the resultant free. Shane then added two more dead balls before hitting a beauty from play. The Continent had the wind at their backs and were headed for home. James Stephens would only manage a further two points in the second thirty and resorted to bombarding the OLG defence for elusive three pointers. The Continent stood firm however and heroic defending from Gary Bryan, Huw Lawlor, Brian Buckley and goalkeeper – Robbie O’Driscoll kept the door firmly closed.  The siege was lifted by a Cian Loy special with five minutes to go and then added to, by yet another Shane Maher free.

Our minors now face a very stiff test in the shape of Dicksboro, who saw off Thomastown at the weekend. They will need to prepare well over the next fortnight in order to meet this challenge. We appeal to all OLG members – young and old to get along to Nowlan Park on Sunday 16th November to cheer on our boys in the Roinn A Minor County Final.

Robbie O’Driscoll, Daniel O’Driscoll, Huw Lawlor, Brian Buckley, Shane Mahony, Robbie Buckley, Gary Bryan, Thomas Gleeson, Cian Loy 0-1, Ross Butler, Sean Bolger 0-2, Danny Bolger 1-0, Shane Maher 1-05 (4 f’s), Daniel O’Connor, Ben Leydon
