Northern Junior C’ship Final

After a slow start when OLG were quickly down a goal and a point to no score, the team gradually got a grip on the game. In a man of the match performance by Alan Geoghegan, which saw the veteran personally bridge a twenty year gap to again win the Northern Junior Hurling Championship.

OLG had a number of goal scoring chances with Danny Bolger going closest on two occasions. It was only when the Blacks & Whites goalkeeper made a positional error, over committing himself in no man’s land, that John Doyle seized the chance to finish to an open net. All through the match the OLG backs played well, ably led by their Captain - Brian Murphy. The half back line of Paddy Deegan, Rick Leydon and Padraig Meaney raised their game at a time early in the second half when OLG suddenly found themselves down by 2 points. The Blacks & Whites centre forward Niall Kennedy gave a really fine display and finished the game having scored 6 points, 3 of which came from frees.

Half time score OLG 1-08 Blacks & Whites 1-07

All evening, the OLG midfield partnership of Brian Dowling and Martin Gibbons worked extremely hard. Dowling showed his quality scoring skills and finishing the game with 2 points. Martin Gibbons further embellished his reputation as one of the Club's hardest working players - a role greatly valued by his fellow team members.

As the game entered the dying minutes, OLG gradually gained a 3 point lead. However Blacks & Whites fired a rasping last minute goal bound shot which was deflected over the bar by the ever safe Sammy Johnston in goal. All spectators agreed that this was an exciting and sporting game played by two very honest teams. A special thanks to team Manager Philly Holohan and two selectors Paul Phelan and Philly Twomey, who have been doing super work with the team. Best wishes to Sheamie Cummins who picked up a bad ankle injury on the night.

Full time score: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-15, Blacks & Whites 1-13

Sammy Johnston, Alan O’Brien, Brian Murphy (Captain), Kevin O’Brien, Paddy Deegan, Rick Leydon, Padraig Meany, Brian Dowling 0-2, Martin Gibbons, Alan Geoghegan 0-7 (5f’s), James Lenehan, Paddy Cantwell 0-3, John Doyle 1-01, Danny Bolger 0-1, Sheamie Cummins 0-1. Panellists: Mark Croghan, Eoin Croghan, Andy Cantwell, Huw Lawlor, Steven Tyrrell, Vinny Wallace, Michael Henebry, Fergal Brennan, Billy Leydon, Ben Leydon, Shane Parsons, Nigel Skehan, Andy Kearns, Gary Bryan, Daniel O’Connor, Ross Butler

Camogie News

The Under 10's took part in their last away blitz of the summer last Saturday (23rd of August) in Conahy. The fact that the group hasn't trained as a group, due to holidays etc, was reflected in the matches. Individual skills, however, have improved and this is probably down to attendance at the O'Loughlins summer camp. The results didn't go our way in any of three matches so we're hoping for a turnaround of form in our home blitz on the 6th of September. The players in attendance were Maebh Richardson, Tara O'Keeffe, Emma Fyson White, Ava O'Grady, Sinéad Dowling, Grace Buckley, Faye Fennelly, Leah Hanrahan, Ríona Crowley, Abby Ware and Sheenagh O'Keeffe

Our Juveniles Do Us Proud

Congratulations to all the O'Loughlin Gaels players from U14 to U17 who represented Kilkenny in various venues around the country. We are very proud of them all. A special mention for Conor Heary, Michael Butler and Dacel Fwamba on winning the prestigious Tony Forristal U14 hurling tournament in Waterford. Kilkenny beat Galway in the final on a scoreline of 2-16 to 2-5. Our very own Conor Heary was the captain of the side, becoming the third O'Loughlins man to captain a winning Tony Forristal team. A proud day for the club!

Under 6 Tourney

Last Sunday morning, the cream of Kilkenny’s under 6 hurling talent , (and some of Wexford’s) descended upon the fine facilities of St. John’s Park at  O’Loughlin Gaels club grounds in their full club colours to take part in a highly anticipated Blitz to showcase all that is good about getting youngsters involved in Juvenile hurling from an early age.

We welcomed teams from Dicksboro, Clara, and St. Patrick’s(Ballyragget), John Lockes (Callan), Young  Irelands (Gowran), Cushinstown(New Ross), O’Loughlin  Gaels and Erin’s Own Castlecomer. Each team played four thrilling mini-matches, with every player receiving a medal for their efforts on the day from O’ Loughlin Gael’s senior club players, Brian Hogan and Mark Kelly, taking time out from their preparation for the upcoming All Ireland SHC. The sportsmanship, camaraderie, spirit and determination of these fine young teams on an unseasonably chilly morning was a fine spectacle for parents, friends and supporters to enjoy.

Huge credit must go to all of the team mentors, managers, assistant coaches and in particular, one Stephen McCormack, without who’s organisational skills and constant enthusiasm for managing the under 6 end of things for O’ Loughlin Gaels, the Blitz could not have been so successfully coordinated. Thanks also is extended to all those who made and served refreshments and handed out warm cups of tea to those die-hard supporters who were on the side-lines for all of the morning’s action.

Drive for Liam Quiz

A League of Their Own

The U14 hurlers of O’Loughlin Gaels and Erin’s Own contested the Roinn A League final in Jenkinstown on Thursday evening last.  Two false starts in as many weeks meant an eager crowd arrived in numbers in the hope that they would finally get to see these two fine teams go head to head.

Maurice Nolan’s boys were out of the blocks early and often.  A defence splitting move saw half back Joe Murphy combine with the menacing Dacel Fwamba (Captain) who in turn fed full forward Conor Kelly. Kelly blasted to the net, the green was raised and the Continent was off and running. Wing man Sean Kenny was lively all evening and put his name on the sheet within the first four minutes with a brilliant individual point. Erin’s Own appeared rattled but to their credit – they kept battling. But there was more pain to come.

The importance of chasing and harrying could never be overstated and it was this relentless work rate that was to yield the next two crucial scores of the game. Captain Fwamba led by example and closed down the Comer goalie, as he tried to emerge from his parallelogram. He finished the spilled ball to the net and the roar of approval went high into the evening air. Jamie Ryan seemed inspired and did likewise minutes later. Space was at a premium, so Jamie soccered to the net to put ten points between the teams with five minutes on the clock. Luke Hogan followed up with a fabulous individual point – his Tipp roots plain for all to see. A Conor Heary free rounded off what was a devastating opening ten minutes by the boys in white and green.

Castlecomer deserve great credit for the manner of their comeback. Three points on the spin helped settle their nerves but they were to suffer another setback with the concession of yet another goal. Dacel Fwamba made an incisive run and pulled first time on the sliotar to shake the net again. Both teams then shared six points evenly (OLG: Kenny, Kelly and Heary) to bring the first half to a close.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 4-06, Erin’s Own 0-07

The second half saw the introduction of David Fogarty, Jack Sheridan, Matt Russell, Declan Coffey and Odhran Lawlor. All were lively and played their part for the team. Conor Heary took up where he left off by pointing a dead ball to increase the St John’s Parish Boys lead to twelve. Comer’s star players then began to shine. Players such as Jack Buggy, Kevin Brennan and Lee Holden in particular caught the eye.  But Conor Heary was prominent at this stage scoring from both the ground and out of the hand. Erin’s Own were fighting for their lives and mustered up a gallant final fling to reduce the ever widening deficit. They added 1-05 (1-04 from play) in the last quarter but were undone by a Barry Lawlor goal that settled matters once and for all.

F/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 5-12, Erin’s Own 1-14

Jamie Malone, John Collins, Mikey Butler, Jack Kearns, Luke Hogan 0-1, Jamie Young, Joe Murphy, Oisin Murphy, Sean Baird 0-1, Conor Heary 0-5 (4f’s), Barry Lawlor 1-0, Sean Kenny 0-2, Dacel Fwamba 2-01, Conor Kelly 1-02, Jamie Ryan 1-0, Subs used: David Fogarty, Jack Sheridan, Matt Russell, Declan Coffey, Odhran Lawlor. Panellists: Jay Meagher, Fiachra O’Callaghan, Jake Fahy

O’Loughlin Gaels would like to congratulate the U14 team on their prestigious win and wish them well for the Championship. We would also like to sincerely thank Maurice Nolan (manager) and his team of Michael Nolan, Sheamie Cummins, Bryan Skehan and Brian Kelly for all their hard work.

Clara Hang On

It was dead ball marksmen who held sway in Jenkinstown on Saturday evening. Mark Bergin and Stephen Murphy of OLG plus Conor and Killian Phelan (Clara) shared no less than twenty-one white flags between them on a brisk August evening, in round five of this Group A SHL clash. The Continent had bagged a maximum eight points from four games prior to meeting the County Champions but their luck was to run out on the night........by the narrowest of margins.

F/T O’Loughlin Gaels 0-17, Clara 1-15 Stephen Murphy 0-2 (2 –f’s), Huw Lawlor, Paddy Deegan, Eddie Kearns, Andy Kearns, Brian Hogan, Paddy Cantwell (0-1), Mark Bergin (0-10 – 8f’s, 1 65), Davy Burke, Sammy Johnston (0-1), Conor Bergin, Jack Nolan (0-1), John Doyle (0-1), Mark Kelly (0-1), Danny Loughnane Subs used: Sheamie Cummins, Alan Geoghegan

The complete version of this OLG match review is available on the O’Loughlin Gaels website: www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie There is also a full review of this match in the Sports section of this newspaper.

Camogie U12’s Trip to Tullamore

The Camogie Association, busy celebrating its 110th year (founded 25 February 1905) insisted that the party wouldn't be held without the Girls from the 'Gaels!  The O'Loughlin Gaels u12 team travelled in convoy to famed O'Connor Park last Saturday to play in the "Camán To Tullamore" Blitz. The girls played three good games, including the final against St Rynagh's, Banagher, home club of O'Loughlin Gaels senior hurling team manager and Offaly stalwart, Aidan Fogarty. The first round match was against St Finian's, Swords, Co Dublin and the girls battled well against bigger opponents to achieve a great result. The white & green stepped it up further to overcome Moorefield, Co Kildare and then had 30 minutes to prepare for the final against a very strong 'Rynagh's team which had cruised through the group games. O'Loughlins benefited from the break and produced a spirited team effort in the final against very skilful Offaly girls. This was an extremely tight and exciting match which ended honours even at the final whistle. Manager Colin Furlong, mentors Eugene Doheny and Mark Brett were very pleased with the performance of the team:  Amy Kelly-Kavanagh, Orla Doheny, Sadhbh O'Leary, Sarah Holohan, Abigael Egan, Taylor Brett, Aoife O'Neill, Danielle Quigley, Claire Morrisson (Capt.), Tracy O'Reilly, Kate Furlong, Aoife O'Neill, Ciara Maher, Katy Hynes, Shauna Ryan.

What the Dickens?

This reporter called to Kyteler’s Inn on Friday night last to see a recital of Great Expectations by none other than the man himself’s Great, Great Grandson – Gerald Dickens. This reporter was astonished to find out that the proprietor of Kyteler’s Inn – Nicky Flynn is in fact Gerald Dickens’s sister. Nicky is a Sion Road and John’s Parish resident of many years. She was self effacing and modest with regard to her distinguished ancestry when probed further by this reporter. Gerald Dickens is a frequent visitor to The Marble City. Be sure to catch his next performance when he pitches tent again in   Kilkenny.

Winners of the U10’s Shield

O’Loughlin Gaels would like to pass on sincere congrats to our boys U10’s who won the prestigious St Mary’s Shield in Clonmel on Saturday last. They were pitted against Ballyboden St Enda’s, St Mary’s Clonmel (hosts), Mount Sion, Clonea Power and Kilmacud Crokes. Well done to the following players who did the Club proud on the day: Alex Sheridan, Evan O’Neill, Michael Butler, Kieran Delaney, Gerard Delaney, Jack Aylmer, Finn Hogan, Ollie Duncan, Kevin Waldron, Kevin O’Connor, Tadhg O’Meara, Mark Holohan, Arron Grogan, Harry O’Grady and Cian Farrell. Well done boys and keep up the good work.

Go GAAmes!

The games are coming thick and fast for our O’Loughlin Gaels under 12’s squad these days. We hosted Conahy Shamrocks and Graigue Ballycallan during the week in two rip roaring contests. What a pleasure it was though, to roll into Windgap on Saturday last to play what turned out to be a formidable outfit. Windgap mothers know their hurling and roared on their sons as the game took on an ebb and flow life of its own. The twelve a side format was hotly contested from start to finish. Windgap were gracious hosts. It looks as if hurling’s future is in safe hands on the Kilkenny / Tipp border – if the evidence of last Saturday’s encounter is anything to go by.

Club Lotto

There was no jackpot winner of the Club Lotto this week. The numbers chosen were: 9, 11, 24, 26 and the bonus number was: 5. If you want to be in with a chance to win €20,000 – you can buy a ticket from the usual promoters or from behind the bar in the Clubhouse.

Congrats Aisling

Congratulations to O'Loughlin Gaels Camogie player - Aisling Butler and the Kilkenny Intermediate Camogie team on reaching the Intermediate All-Ireland Final.  Kilkenny will play Limerick on September 14 next.

Summer Camp is Here

O'Loughlin Gaels GAA Club, Kilkenny: Hope you all enjoyed the first week of Summer Camp! Thanks to all our coaches and assistants last week. A special thank you to the inter-county players who visited the camp - Hurlers Eoin Larkin, Colin Fennelly and Paul Murphy, Footballers Padraig Fogarty, Sean Campbell and Rory Finn and Camogie players Jacqui Frisby and Miriam Walsh.

Under 10’s

Our Under 10’s squad had a great day in Dublin on Sunday last. Sean Hogan contacted this reporter to say the boys took a bus up to see their old pals in Kilmacud Crokes. They played four games and won them all! Then it was back on the bus in order to take their seats in Croker to see the ferocious battle between Kilkenny and Limerick. Our U10’s got to see their Club heroes Mark Kelly and Brian Hogan up close in what was an unforgettable match.

Semi-Final Sunday

O’Loughlin Gaels would like to congratulate four of its finest who took part in the All-Ireland semi-final double bill at headquarters on Sunday last. Ross Butler and Daniel O’Connor were on the minor panel that saw off Waterford after extra time in a titanic tussle. Mark Kelly and Brian Hogan lined out for the Black and Amber in the senior semi against Limerick. In years to come, this may go down in the annals as the “thunder and lightning” semi final. Conditions overhead though, were nothing compared to the ferocity on the ground meted out by both sides, in what truly was an epic semi-final, fought out in atrocious conditions.

Under 6’s Play Ballyragget

Our up-and-coming under-6’s were back in force last Thursday evening as they lined out against the maroon and white jerseys of St. Patrick’s Ballragget for three rousing matches alongside their U-8 comrades who also played hosts to the impressive Ballyragget visitors. An unwavering Ballyragget panel gave their all in what turned out to be an impressive exhibition of promising young hurling talent.

Thanks as always to our friends from St. Patrick’s of Ballyragget, team mentors; Ger Maher and Andy Hanrahan, Under-6 manager Stephen McCormack and all who turned out to cheer on the teams in the evening sunshine. U-6 OLG Panel: Cian Byrne, Luke McDonald, Ruairí Hanrahan, Conor Houlihan, T.J. Comerford, Harry Egan, Jaden Broaders, A.J. O’Keeffe, Eldon Sheridan, Christopher Hayes, Matthew Parsons, Jamie O’ Keeffe, Jamie Houlihan, Jack O’ Dwyer, Ruairí Bowden Mullen, Conor McDonald, Ryan Farrell, Cathal Grogan, Adam Quigley, Amin Ibraham

It’s Our History

Our country commemorates a number of significant centenaries in the next few years. The first of these gets underway in earnest this month and marks one hundred years since the beginning of World War One 1914 - 1918. The Great War (as it was also known) was fought in mainland Europe (France and Flanders) and saw man pitted against man in horrific trench warfare conditions. It is estimated that almost two thousand men and women with Kilkenny connections served in WW1.

This reporter called to the Town Hall in Kilkenny on Saturday last and met with OLG stalwart Donal Croghan. Donal is Chairman of The Commemorating 1914 – 1918 Committee. He explained that his Great Grand-Uncle John Purcell fought and was killed in The Great War. John Purcell hailed originally from Maddoxtown, Co Kilkenny. Fellow OLG member John Joe Cullen also has connections with The Great War and he too is a member of the committee commemorating The Great War.

The Easter Rising of 1916 will have its Centenary commemorated in two years time. Both of these events have had a profound and lasting legacy on this island right up to the present day. If you have a relation from St John’s Parish who took part in either of these seismic conflicts (WW1 or Easter Rising 1916) and would like to share their story; please contact this reporter at the e-mail address above. We would be delighted to hear from you. We cannot change our history, so together – let’s share it.

Lisdowney Sevens

Congrats to our OLG U13’s squad who took part in the Lisdowney Sevens at the weekend. The tourney was held on Saturday last in atrocious conditions. Our rain sodden youngsters battled all the way to the final, where they were pipped by a game James Stephens outfit. This reporter was informed that despite the matches being seven a side; over thirty OLG jerseys were used on the day – such was the relentlessness of Saturday’s rain. A special mention must go to Linda O’Leary who appears to have come to the rescue with what must have seemed a never ending supply of fresh socks to keep feet dry and warm for the fray. OLG squad: Jamie Young (Captain), Niall Higgins, Conor Kelly, David Fogarty, Declan Coffey, Jack Sheridan, Donal O’Leary, Success Edogun, Kieran Murphy, William Slattery.

Niall Bergin (organiser) was in touch with this reporter to say there are a record one hundred and sixty eight boys and girls signed up for this year’s camp. By the end of Summer Camp 2014, your child will have had a chance to learn and hone their GAA skills in an environment that is encouraging and participative. OLG would like to extend best wishes to all those taking part.
