Dead Ball Maher Takes Control

Ballyragget played host to the minors of O’Loughlin Gaels and Freshford in the Roinn A M.H.C. quarter-final on Saturday evening last. The winners were guaranteed a shot at the boys from the Village – so there was a lot to play for.

Daniel O’Connor started brightly and won possession in the danger zone, only to be pulled to the ground.  Dead ball specialist Shane Maher went through his deliberate pre-shot routine before calmly tapping over for the opening score of the game. Freshford’s Goalie Darren Brennan would cancel this score out with an expertly taken free from all of eighty yards in the fourth minute.  Robbie Buckley made a great catch moments later to lay down a marker on behalf of the OLG defence. Buckley then combined well with the commanding Gary Bryan – to once again clear Continent lines.

Shane Maher stood over another dead ball with five minutes on the clock – the result was never in doubt.  The next five minutes though, would prove crucial to the game’s outcome. A point from the rock steady DOC as well as a Shane Maher sixty-five preceded arguably the most important score of the game.  Gary Bryan found Cian Loy, who in turn released Danny Bolger. The Freshford boys pulled down their man and the ref parted his arms ominously.

Shane Maher top-spinned the ball brilliantly to the back of the St Lachtains net and now the gap was six. Lyndon Brannigan was introduced to the fold in the closing minutes of the first half.  Two more Daniel O’Connor points along with strikes from Danny Bolger and Ben Leydon would send the St John’s Parish Boys in for the half time cuppa with a healthy seven point lead.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-08, St Lachtains 0-04

The second half saw the introduction of Sean Bolger, Sean Kiely, Eoin Croghan and Robbie Murphy. Freshford were nothing if not brave in adversity and hit OLG for a brace to try to get back in the game. In truth this if anything, only spurred the St John's Parish Boys boys to see out the game emphatically.

Michael Holohan and his players know they have a much tougher task ahead of them in a week’s time – when they take on the Village in the semis. It is safe to assume our boys will not be afforded the time and space to pick off points or passes at ease, without meeting fierce resistance. Our Minors must prepare well in the week ahead in order to see that challenge and raise it some!

Seniors Bow Out

Wild and windy Nowlan Park was the Saturday evening venue for the eagerly awaited S.H.C quarter-final between O’Loughlin Gaels and Clara. The draw pitted OLG against last year’s county Champions in a winner takes all knock out scenario. Something was simply going to have to give! In the end two soft goals would prove the difference between the teams. The goals gifted Clara safe passage to the semis – where we wish them well.

Martin Comerford found Danny Loughnane in the first minute, who struck sweetly for the opening score of the game, with only seconds on the clock. Clara’s Liam Ryan then lobbed a speculative ball which freakishly found the OLG net, in what would be an omen of things to come. Gorta was in the thick of the action once again and broke ball into the path of Mark Bergin, who duly dissected the posts.  The Continent were beginning to get on top at this point and rattled off five unanswered points – two from Mark Bergin and one each from Martin Comerford, Mark Kelly and Conor Bergin.

But disaster was to strike again – this time on the stroke of the half-time whistle. A short puck out led to a defensive mix-up which Clara punished with a second three pointer. The teams left the field of play on level terms – hardly a fair reflection of the balance of play.

H/T O’Loughlin Gaels 0-09, Clara 2-03

The second half saw the introduction of Davy Burke but it was Clara who dominated the opening quarter of the second thirty. What their swarm defensive system lacked in aesthetic beauty; it more than made up for – in brute force effectiveness. Our boys seemed to convince themselves they needed goals to get back in the game. Time and time again, they ran into maroon traffic patrolling the Clara half of the pitch. When the goals did finally come (a Stephen Murphy 21 yard pile-driver & a Mark Kelly goalmouth scramble) they unfortunately proved – too little, too late.

F/T O’Loughlin Gaels 2-12, Clara 2-14

Stephen Murphy 1-0 (f), Anthony Forristal, Eoghan Grant, Eddie Kearns, Paddy Butler, Brian Hogan, Niall Bergin, Paddy Deegan 0-1, Mark Bergin 0-4 (3 f’s), Martin Comerford 0-1, Jack Nolan, Sammy Johnston 0-1, Conor Bergin 0-1, Mark Kelly 1-3, Danny Loughnane 0-1

U14’s Roinn A Final

O'Loughlin Gaels would like to send hearty congratulations to Maurice Nolan and his U14 boys, who were crowned County Champions today. OLG beat Erin's Own of Castlecomer by the comprehensive score line of 6-14 to 1-05 in Jenkinstown this afternoon. This completes a momentous League and Championship double for this group of boys. We look forward to seeing them blossom even further, in the years to come.

O'Loughlin Gaels under 14 team came up against deserving finalists Erin's own of comer in this final played in a blustery Conahy. Having been given an early scare against Lisdowney in the semi, these young men were not going to allow that happen again and they were the team that came out of the blocks with all guns blazing. They were first to every ball early on and took a deserving early lead with 2 cracking goals from Jamie Ryan topped up with a goal from Conor Heary who kept the score board ticking over with 5 further points and Conor Kelly knocking over a couple more.

Erin's own had beaten the village to earn their place in the final and have a never give up attitude. They recovered from the blistering pace set by O’Loughlins to get a goal and go in at half time trailing but still in the game. 3:08 to 1:03

The lads knew not to fall asleep against this strong Erin's own team and the first 10 minutes of the second half yielded few scores, but excellent hurling from both teams. The breakthrough score from O’Loughlins came from David Fogarty following an excellent passage of play from star player Sean Kenny. Sean caught the ball and took on several players before unselfishly offloading to David who still had work to do and managed a skilful flick past the keeper.

That seemed to be the score to allow our lads push ahead and they finished out in style to win in convincing fashion. Captain Mickey butler lifted the trophy to rapturous and deserving applause from the big crowd.

Well done lads, it was a performance fitting for a final.

Champions League

Thomastown was the venue for O’Loughlin Gaels first ever S.H.L. win on Saturday last. OLG’s opponents were Rower Inistioge – table toppers of their respective group. Both teams served up a hot and heavy contest in front of a large crowd, in the unseasonably warm October sun.

Jason Quan was out of the blocks early, making an expert block to thwart a Rower attack. Anthony Forristal made two catches in quick succession and cleared his lines on both occasions.  But it was Mark Bergin who would open the scoring from the middle of the field with a superb strike, with two minutes on the clock.  The Rower responded well and were on level terms – moments later.

The industrious Paddy Deegan used his brain and his boot to propel the ball forward to John Doyle, who turned neatly and struck off his left to raise a welcome white flag. Mark Kelly showed county class by taking one from the clouds and making a surging run through the heart of the Inistioge defence. He was unlucky not to be rewarded for his efforts with a goal. The Rower turned defence into attack smartly however and Tom Murphy struck an instant three pointer for the first goal of the game.

Jack Nolan (like Kelly before him) also charged through the Inistioge defence. He too was unlucky to be denied but the St John’s Parish Boys were making inroads. With eight minutes on the clock, Paddy Deegan seemed to roll an errant pass down the length of his stick. He then struck off his left for one of the scores of the game. Now the deficit was just two points.  Amazingly however, Inistioge responded almost immediately with their second goal – a strike by James Cashin.  More good Mark Kelly work then released Sammy Johnston in the corner. Sammy pinned his ears back and headed for goal. He coolly slotted home to raise a green flag to give OLG some much needed momentum in what was an action packed period of the game.

The Rower would add only three more points in the first half but the midfield pairing of Deegan and Bergin chipped in with two points each before the opening thirty was up. Danny Loughnane and Martin Comerford also raised white flags – Comerford’s effort from the sideline –undoubtedly the score of the half.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-10, Rower Inistioge 2-05

The second half saw the introduction of Conor Bergin, Paddy Butler and Davy Burke. A Michael Grace free for the Rower opened proceedings and brought the deficit down to the minimum. The Continent responded well though, with three points on the spin – two Mark Bergin frees and another Gorta special. Niall Bergin was coming into his own at this point and mopped up an amount of ball from his half-back berth. Eoghan Grant and Eddie Kearns also worked well together and combined, to clear their lines.

Moments later, Deegan struck the woodwork but Mark Kelly was on hand to convert the rebound for his first point (well deserved) of the game. The Rower tried desperately hard to stay in touch and played well to the final whistle. Conor Bergin’s introduction was timely though. CB made a great catch and struck a beauty to keep daylight between the teams. The final act of the game saw Brian Hogan’s long delivery being caught by Danny Loughnane. Danny was pulled down in the square and Mark Bergin wisely tapped over the resultant penalty for a deserved two point win.

F/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-18, Rower Inistioge 2-13

Captain Niall Bergin collected the trophy on behalf of the team and thanked the OLG management team of Aidan Fogarty, Colin Furlong, Nigel Skehan and Dinny Tyrrell. He wished Inistioge well for the remainder of the season and called for the traditional three cheers for the Rower boys.

Stephen Murphy, Anthony Forristal, Eoghan Grant, Eddie Kearns, Jason Quan, Brian Hogan, Niall Bergin, Paddy Deegan 0-3, Mark Bergin 0-9 (5f’s & 1p), Martin Comerford 0-2, Jack Nolan, Sammy Johnston 1-0, John Doyle 0-1, Mark Kelly 0-1, Danny Loughnane 0-1, Subs used: Conor Bergin 0-1, Paddy Butler, Davy Burke

U16’s Are County Champs!

O'Loughlin Gaels regained the Duggan Steel U-16 Roinn A County title with a superb display of skill and speed that saw them overwhelm last year’s winners Dicksboro in Bennettsbridge.

The conditions were summer-like and from the very first ball O'Loughlin Gaels made their intentions known when Eoin Wall pointed after Robbie O'Driscoll found him in space. Better was to follow for the St John’s outfit moments later when Ben Maher latched onto a breaking ball, to send the green flag waving. Edward Moylan responded for Dicksboro with two quickly pointed frees before O'Driscoll scored a great individual goal.

Moylan again pointed for Dicksboro and it took until the 20th minute for the next score to arrive with the deficit being cut to three via a Justin Cahill point. O'Driscoll, Sean Bolger & Wall all pointed with Dicksboro's sole score during the middle quarter coming from Mark Nolan. The last score of the half came from O'Driscoll, leaving O'Loughlin Gaels leading 2-5 to 0-5 at the break.

Many were expecting a tight second half instead it was game, set & match by the 43rd minute with O'Loughlin Gaels out scoring their opponents 2-4 to 1-1 to gain an unassailable lead. Wall was again to the fore, pointing from the restart with Eoin O'Shea & Sean Bolger (2) each grabbing points. Sean Bolger then split the Dicksboro defence going on a 45 yard which ended with the midfielder sending the ball to the roof of the net. Liam Kennedy hit with back with a goal after some neat work by Evan Carroll. Edward Moylan briefly lifted hopes with a pointed free but Eoin Wall finished the game as a contest when he goaled. O'Loughlin Gaels had strangled the life out of their opponents and added further misery with a Ben Maher goal. The St John's outfit will take great delight in this victory with star performances from Eoin Wall, Sean Bolger, Shane Mahony & Robbie O'Driscoll and Tervine Wallace.

O'Loughlin Gaels: Stephen Scanlon, Joe Banville, Jordan Molloy, Charlie Deegan, Peter Collins, Shane Mahony, Jay Leahy, Sean Bolger, Eoin Kelly, Ronan Buckley, Tervine Wallace, Ben Maher, Eoin Wall, Robbie O'Driscoll, Eoin O'Shea.
Subs: Adam Power, Kevin Murphy, Ryan Poyntz, Joe Murphy , John Delaney.

Geoghegan The Great!

Ballyragget under lights was the unique Sunday night setting for the keenly awaited city derby in this Section B final of the J.H.C. When the Continent and the Village collide – there’s sure to be fireworks and this occasion proved to be no different. In the end – An Alan Geoghegan master class would be the difference between the teams.

Paddy Cantwell got in an early block to signal intent but Conor McQuillan and Eoin McCormack of James Stephens were to get the first two scores of the game. The same Paddy Cantwell struck a beauty from the sideline to reduce the deficit to a single point. Alan Geoghegan’s equalizer was a cracker off his left and was a portent of things to come. Brian Murphy looked solid around his own house and rose high to take one from the floodlit sky. Huw Lawlor also emerged from his defence twice in as many minutes to clear OLG lines.

Martin Gibbons won possession around the middle and quickly found Brian Dowling who struck to put O’Loughlins in the lead for the first time – on twelve minutes.  The Village hit back however with a double of their own to once again take the narrowest of leads. Padraic Meaney was prominent at this point and could be seen mopping up an amount of ball. Danny Bolger struck the equalizer on seventeen minutes on the back of some neat Daniel DOC O’Connor work.  The game was interrupted at this point by a good old schmozzle - both teams wanted this one badly.

Danny Bolger found Alan Geoghegan who fired a miracle shot from the sideline over the black spot – whatta score! The Village were not to be outdone however and finished the half with four fine points of their own (McQuillan bagging two more).  Ricky Leydon battened down the hatches in defence with a superb catch and clearance and OLG added two more points to their tally – a Geoghegan free and a Danny Lenihan special to end the half one point adrift.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 0-07, James Stephens 0-08

An Eoin McCormack free stretched the Village’s lead to two points before OLG hit three on the spin. Two in a row from Danny Lenihan (both from narrow angles) and a neat Brian Dowling point once again, put The Continent out in front. The see-saw nature of the game was to continue – with the Village once more wrestling back the advantage with two unanswered points. But cometh the hour..............that man Alan Geoghegan fired the leveller on eighteen minutes. Then, came the decisive score of the game. Danny Bolger cracked his shot off the crossbar and Paddy Cantwell followed up the rebound to pull hard for a precious three pointer.

The Village were not done yet and added four more points but Alan Geoghegan would strike two beauties (one from a free and one from play) to ensure OLG would run out two point winners of this highly entertaining game.

F/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-13, James Stephens 0-14

Sammy Johnston, Alan O’Brien, Brian Murphy, Andy Cantwell, Huw Lawlor, Ricky Leydon, Padraig Meaney, Vinny Wallace, Martin Gibbons, Alan Geoghegan 0-6 (2f’s), Paddy Cantwell 1-1, Daniel O’Connor, Danny Bolger 0-1, Brian Dowling 0-2, Danny Lenihan 0-3, Subs Used: Sheamie Cummins

Big Ben Calls Time on Piltown

Thomastown was the wet and blustery venue for this first round championship clash between the minors of O’Loughlin Gaels & Piltown on Sunday last.  Even though it was the Continent who were playing into a stiff breeze; a decisive Ben Leydon strike in the eleventh minute of the game, all but put paid to Piltown’s hopes, in this one sided affair.

It was the boys in the St John’s Parish defence, who were out of the traps early though. Shane Mahony was out in front, made a great take and cleared his lines – to lay down a marker for all. Huw Lawlor showed a calmness beyond his years and handpassed to safety in the shape of Thomas Gleeson. Brian Buckley stood firm to make a brave goalmouth block to deny the southerners an almost certain goal. Gary Bryan made a great catch as the OLG defence started to win the individual and collective battle.

Danny Bolger opened the scoring with a neatly taken point after all of nine minutes. One minute later – MOTM DOC O’Connor pounced on a defensive mix-up to crash the ball to the net. OLG were beginning to fire on all cylinders. Moments later, Ben Leydon got the end of a Daniel O’Connor / Cian Loy combination move to fire to the net off his left hand side. The gap had opened to six and Piltown must have sensed there was more to come.

Robbie Buckley’s free found DOC, who pointed to stretch the lead further.  Piltown were nothing if not gallant – with Aidan Nugent and Shane Dwyer continually catching the eye. Lively Shane Maher heaped more pain on Piltown however, in the sixteenth minute – by raising OLG’s third green flag of the half. Points by Cian Loy and Danny Bolger brought the half to a close with the margin now nine and the breeze at their backs still to come.

H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 3-04, Piltown 0-04

The second half saw the introduction of Sean Kiely, Robbie Murphy, Kevin Rowe and Thomas Wadding. By this stage – the result was beyond doubt. Daniel O’Connor added to his tally as well as his own brilliant individual display - with a further 1-03 from play. Piltown managed only one point in the second thirty. It must be borne in mind that the men from the south have a small pool from which to pick and are to be commended for the work they are doing, with limited resources.

Our students will face stiffer examination papers in the weeks to come. They will need to make sure they study diligently in order to ensure they are up to passing the test!

F/T:  O’Loughlin Gaels 6-17, Piltown 0-05

Robbie O’Driscoll, Shane Mahony, Huw Lawlor, Brian Buckley, Jack Lawlor, Robbie Buckley 0-2 (1 65), Gary Bryan, Thomas Gleeson 0-1, Cian Loy 0-1, Ross Butler 1-0, Luke Rafter, Danny Bolger 1-2, Shane Maher 1-4 (3f’s), Daniel O’Connor 2-05 (1 f), Ben Leydon 1-2 Subs Used: Sean Kiely, Robbie Murphy, Kevin Rowe, Thomas Wadding

Camogie

The Junior Camogie team played Thomastown in the 1/4 Final of the Championship last Sunday morning in St John's Park and won on a score line of  2-5 to 0-3. Having played with the wind in the first half the girls went in at half time ahead 0-4 to 0-2, scores coming from Aisling Butler and Sarah Buckley.  Early in the second half some hard work from the O Loughlins forwards resulted in a Amy Bryan point. Sarah Buckley and Bronagh Cleere both added goals and Thomastown converted a free to leave the final score O Loughlins 2-5 Thomastown 0-3. Team Lizzie Kavanagh, Stephanie Buckley, Shauna Brennan, Grainne Walsh, Kate Walsh, Rebecca Cleere, Kate Nolan, Laura Greene, Laura Murphy, Sarah Burke, Sarah Buckley(1-3), Bronagh Cleere(1-0), Amy Bryan(0-1), Aisling Butler(0-1), Karen Cleere. Subs Laura Butler and Megan O Keeffe.

This is a Parish Pastoral Council initiative and the frequency of this little social event may well be increased in the future.

Kilkenny Cancer Support Charity Shop

Urgently require volunteers for our shop due to expansion. We need men and women possibly retired or school leavers, unemployed people or people who have four hours a week to spare. You will be fully trained in retail and customer service. We have a lovely team environment and it will be good for you C.V. to add volunteering as part of your service to your community for a local Kilkenny Charity such as Cois Nore. Please call Margaret on 085171100 or 0567715001 or call into the shop anytime.

Virtual Tour

Be sure to log onto our parish website – stjohnskilkenny.com – and click on Virtual Tour to see the beautiful wide-angled views of the exteriors and interiors of our three parish churches.

The Magenta Ball

THE MAGENTA BALL for Lifeline Kilkenny takes place on October 11th  in Hotel Kilkenny.
Lifeline is Kilkenny’s suicide prevention forum  and it consists of state and voluntary bodies in Kilkenny that deal on a daily basis with people effected by depression, bereavement and suicide.
It is tasked with the implementation of the county plan 'Our Community: Our Conversation'.  The plan has over 60 actions encompassing all communities and all ages countywide.
The forum is made up of committed individuals and organisations, the will is there, the funds are not.  To raise funds The Magenta Ball will take place in Hotel Kilkenny on October 11th.
A fabulous night out with pre dinner cocktails at 7pm, followed by dinner with wine and the night will finish to the sound of Thank Funk a seven piece swing band.  Tickets are €50 each and can be purchased from Trish @ 087 7565376.
Suicide has touched every community in Kilkenny, help Lifeline make a difference.
More information about Lifeline can be got at www.lifeline-kilkenny.org
