U21 Championships

Two big performances by our u21 teams see them advance in their respective championships comfortably. A ruthless performance by the A's saw them account for the Erins Own challenge on a scoreline of 5-18 to 0-8 on Saturday. Three first half goals by Daniel O'Connor hit the right note for onlookers as the lads powered through both halves to ensure their progression.
Sundays outing for the B's was not so straight forward as they found themselves a point down at half time against a very fancied Barrow Rangers side. Four second half goals though complimented a stronger second 30 minutes to finish out 4-16 to 1-13.
Well done to all involved. Next round Qtr finals are scheduled for the weekend of Nov 17/18.
Lovely hurling.

U19b’s crashed out of the championship last weekend when they just couldn’t get up to the pace of the game against Emeralds. It was a disappointing result after a year of a very disappointing fixtures schedule where no momentum could build. Hopefully there will be big improvements across the board next year.

CAMOGIE ARE COUNTY CHAMPIONS
Picture
O'LOUGHLIN GAELS CAMOGIE - JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2018
O'Loughlin Gaels 1-9 to 2-5 St. Claires (Slieverue/Kilmacow)

A 61st minute point by Sarah Burke earned O’Loughlin Gaels Camogie Club the Junior County Championship for the first time in its 27 year history. There were joyous scenes at John Lockes Park at full time as players, club stalwarts and supporters celebrated a hard fought win.  Burkes' point topped a superb individual performance (3 points from play) and was just rewards for a team that were dominant throughout the game.

The game started brightly for the girls who played against a stiff wind in the first half. Within 3 minutes of the start 2 goal chances were scuppered by an already under pressure St. Claires defence as Burke, Amy Bryan, Danielle Quigley, Ella Richardson and Nyah Egan were eager to take on this game from the outset and lay down a marker. Before long the Gaels had worked up an advantage of 1-1 to no score – Laura Greene getting the scoreboard ticking with a fine point while some well-earned fortune saw an Aisling Butler 45’ drop to the net. St. Claires returned 2 points before Sarah Burke pointed her first and Aisling Butler converted a free to make it 1-3 to 0-2 at half time.

The early exchanges could have reflected a stronger advantage going into the break but this was a tough encounter with nothing coming easy. Lizzie Kavanagh (Goalie) and Ciara Murphy combining to clear the lines also in that first period hence averting a mis-leading score differential. The challenges were hard but the O’Loughlins team spirit was self-evident as no girl was going to be left alone. The workrate to block, hook and break ball was relentless with the half back line of Ailbhe Galwey, Rebecca Cleere and Shauna Brennan in no mood to allow any advantage to the opposition. Rebecca Cleere’s performance in the no. 6 earned her a well-deserved Player of the Match but in truth each player did their jobs with a 100% commitment.

The gaels continued to dominate the second half and a brace of points from Laura Murphy looked to put a safe distance between the sides with less than 20 minutes remaining. But all teams hit a purple patch and St. Claires would hit theres now.  The efforts exherted to this point by our heroines were beginning to show as legs were tiring allowing St Claires take advantage by hitting 1-2 without reply to narrow the margin to the minimum. Sarah burke sought to steady the ship with her second point but  St. Claires refused to lay down and hit a goal to put them 1 point clear and 6mins remaining putting a shudder down the collctive spines of the strong St. John's parish support. It was almost curtains soon after when a St Claires forward found herself alone in front of the goal only to gather the ball and strike for goal but for the unrushing heroics of corner back Ena Kearns who managed to break the tackle and clear…a resulting point the lesser score to give away. With two points behind and as many minutes left on the clock, and thoughts of heartbreak, the girls somehow collectively re-energised and put in a massive final few moments to draw level..a superb second point from Laura Greene and a converted placed ball (Aisling Butler). The second half introductions of Kate Lawless and Neasa Galwey  injected a fresh energy and a renewed drive to the cause as Ella Richardson and Amy Bryan had given it everything to ensure the teams success.  With their tails now up Rebecca Cleere directed matters at the back, supported by captain Kate Nolan from full back, and delivered to the attack where Danielle Quigley gathered and offloaded to Sarah Burke who broke to the centre and struck for the final deciding score.  Two minutes of nervous tension followed but a huge team effort ensured that nothing was going to take this away from them.  The final whistle sounded to huge emotional scenes and O’Loughlin Gaels Camogie were crowned Junior County Champions for the very first time.

Well done to all the players, manager Stephen Murphy, Selectors, Maurice Nolan, Ruth Comerford & Sheamie Cummins, and all involved.  Lovely hurling.

Team: L. Kavanagh, C. Murphy, K Nolan (Capt)., E Kearns, S Brennan, R Cleere, A Galwey, L. Murphy (0-2), L Greene (0-2), S Burke (0-3), A Butler (1-2, 45’ F), D Quigley, E Richardson, N Egan, A Bryan.

JUNIOR CAMOGIE FINAL

Well done to the camogie junior team who got over the line after a great tussle with camogie kingpins Thomastown on Sunday morning at Clara.  The girls had to really dig it out after going behind by half time 2-2 to 0-5 . But the girls were not to be phased and had the hard yards done at training and outscored the losers 7 pts to 3pts to edge out the game. It was a tense final few minutes with both teams sharing the lead as the game closed out but Aisling Butler (who already had 8points to her credit) landed the final score with a free to take O’Loughlin Gaels into the final and an opportunity to advance to Intermediate grade next season.  Well done to all involved in what was a fine team performance.  A huge O’Loughlin Gaels / St. John’s Parish support will be needed now ..fixture update and details will be posted on O’Loughlin Gaels GAA & Camogie Club’s social media pages as soon as confirmed. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Result: O'Loughlin Gaels 0:16 to 2:12 Clara.
A 31st minute goal ended the O'Loughlins challenge for this year's championship in heart breaking fashion. With 2 points clear in the dying moments it looked like the Gaels had just about done enough but the threat was there throughout the final quarter and eventually Clara got the break they needed. At half time the mood was good as O'Loughlin Gaels had performed reasonably well. But they could not build on that momentum and struggled to seal the deal in a pedantic
[u1]  second 30minutes. Clara hung in and got their reward while the St. John's faithful left Danesfort scratching their heads and resigned to hoping next year will be the year. It was a disappointing end for sure but a huge thanks to all the players and management for the work put in. Championships hurling is never easy and often unpredictable.....that's why we love it.
Hard luck to all involved. ..Lovely Hurling

MINOR EXIT:
Result: Minor A Hurling Championship
O'Loughlin Gaels 1:15 to 2:18 James Stephens.
Two early goals conceded ultimately proved the difference between these sides. The winners had opened up an early 7 point lead that that forced the Gaels to chase the game for the remainder. The deficit was reduced to 2 points by half time thanks to a John McNamara goal but the efforts had taken their toll and injuries forced half time changes to personal and team layout that would make the task tougher again. But the lads dug in and before long had equalised the game, gained mainly from frees that the village happily conceded around the 40 yard line to counter the majority of possession won by the Gaels. Chasing the game puts extra strain both physically and mentally on players however and Village comfortably dominated the final stages finishing out six point winners. It was a good effort after a summer of disjointed fixtures. Hard luck to all the lads who have always given it their all in an O'Loughlins jerseys and thanks to the management team of Michael Holohan, Andy Comerford, Ben Fogarty, Paddy Tyrrell

CAMOGIE ROUNDUP

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Result O’Loughlin Gaels 2-10 to 0-8 Black & Whites
Good news for the Camogie adults players who injected much needed positivity into a the club’s mood after they ran out winners in their Junior Qtr Fina on Sunday afternoon.  After two weeks of painful results the Junior Girls got off to a lying start when Danielle Quigley opened up the account with 1-1 from play.  Aisling Butler put it a good shift throughout this game and converted the first two of her frees after Blacks & Whites had returned three of their own. O’Loughlins going to the break with a two point lead after Black & Whites fired over the final point of the half.  1-3 to 0-4.
Butler converted again on the restart but Blacks &  Whites would dig their heels in and convert three points without return to level matters. But this team were not to be phased and in a final 15 minutes the girls fought together for every score. All year the focus at training was support play and the team’s workrate and spirit throughout the field ensured the girls got the better of exchanges to the final whistle. Nyah Egan got the lead back to deserving 3 points when she netted midway through the half.  Aisling Butler kept up her good form and added 2 points from play plus 2 more converted frees to press home the advantage.  Laura Murphy was rewarded for her efforts when she popped one over in the closing stages and Aisling Butler finished the game out with one more from play to keep the girls championship dreams on track. It was a good overall team performance carried out in a workmanlike fashion.  The girls must keep that attitude going now heading into the semi-final next week.  Well done to all involved.

There was a heartbreaking defeat for our brave u16 team deprived them of a place in the Roinn B final. They built up an early lead of 1-4 to no score  in the first half, but a goal just before half time kept Danesfort in the match and the half time score was 1-4 to 1-2. It took an injury time free to decide the match which finished 1-8 to 1-9. Danesfort progress to meet Clara in the final. We are very proud of our girls and their honest effort throughout the year. They are a credit to their club and families

Abigail Egan growing extra arms while in action against Danesfort with O'Loughlin Gaels Camogie u16s

There was disappointment too last Sunday week as we took to the field with high hopes in the Roinn B Minor final. This was a full-on encounter against St. Claires and an edge of the seat hard fought match saw the girls from the south receive three yellow cards. The match finished level on full time at 1-5 apiece.
Extra time followed and the tough intensity of this fierce battle took its toll on our young team. The game finished 1-7 to 1-8 and the combined forces of Slieverue and Kilmacow will move up to Roinn A next year having won both league and championship. We are very proud of our team who played clean skilful camogie, showing great team spirit for the future

The u10s  joined u12s and enjoyed a brilliant end of year trip to Dublin where they played games against Fingallians of Swords followed by a visit to the National Aquatic Centre for some deep water training in preparation for next year’s season.  The u12s were in buoyant mood after their win in their Co. Final last weekend over Ballyhale ensuring a strong future for O’Loughlin Gaels Camogie. Well done all.

U6s and u8s completed their year with a final training session at St. John’s Park followed by some well deserved refreshment provided by all the mentors to thank the girls for their efforts all year.

RESULTS:

IT was a disappointing couple of days for the adult teams that promised so much.  On Saturdays the seniors were pipped by city rivals James Stephens by a single point after a tentative league final at Nowlan Park. A  good start  to the 2nd half saw the Gaels lead by 5 points 10 mins in but the Village reeled back in that lead to make it a cat & mouse game to the final whistle. The village took their final opportunity however and took spoils.
It was a much more clear cut story at Freshford on Sunday when the Juniors exited the championship after a second half clinical display by neighbours Dicksboro. The boro boys put away their opportunities as they came about and finished out deserving nine point winners advancing to the semi-finals.  Hard luck to all involved who put in a superb effort all year showing great potential for the coming seasons. A big thanks to all involved in looking after all our teams

CAMOGIE NEWS

There was mixed fortunes for our camogie teams last weekend with two teams competing in County Finals.  The Minor Girls gave a great account of themselves in a very competitive match at Callan against Kilmacow/Slieverue.  In a very tight game the teams were inseparable at the end of normal time but Kilmacow benefited from a goal in the extra time period that gave them a lead they would not relinquish. It was a super effort  by the girls and management who have been brilliant all year. Well done girls
It was better news on Saturday afternoon in Clara when the u12 girls triumphed in their County Final with a solid win over Ballyhale.  These girls have been undefeated all year and their reward has been richly deserved. Well done to all involved.

HANDBALL
Well done to O'Loughlin Gaels Handball John Morrissey and Willie Murphy from Kilfane who won the Masters 60.30 Leinster final last week in Wicklow against Wexford opposition representing Kilkenny GAA Handball.. They go on to play Ulster in the All-Ireland semi final in 2 weeks time. Best of luck gentlemen.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Result : Junior Hurling C'ship Section B Semi-Final
O'Loughlin Gaels 2-16 to 1-17 Ballyhale Shamrocks
A late goal by Owen Wall earned O'Loughlin Gaels Juniors another bite of the cherry and extra time in this hard fought victory on Saturday evening. Ballyhale had the better if the exchanges for much of the second half after a first half that saw little between the sides ..a goal each (N Leydon for the Gaels) , a point each from sidelines (E Walsh) and an even mix of scores from play and placed ball conversions. A late Eoin Cody point would be the only difference between them going into the break. Olg 1-5 to 1-6 B'hale)
Martin Davis would add to the Ballyhale lead on the restart with a fine point but Billy Leydon (free) and Owen Wall levelled matters on the 32nd minute and the Gaels looked to get a foothold in the game. Ballyhale went back in front soon after with a point from D Aylward. Then Daniel O'Conner, who was causing hardship, broke a ball that would see three Gaels move it quickly culminating in Cian Loy forcing a fine save from Ballyhale keeper Dean Mason. Martin Davis at 10 for Ballyhale was going well at this stage and added another point before Leydon returned a pointed free. Ballyhale would hit a purple patch now and increase the deficit to 6 points as O'Loughins struggled to keep the ball in the attacking zone. 10 minutes from time and the Gaels introduce new energy, Oisin Murphy, Luke Hogan and Dacel Fwamba all enter the frey and the fresh legs made an immediate impact. Billy Leydon pointed a free won by Murphy and the Gaels began to claw back the lead to 2 points with 2 minutes remaining. Ballyhale substitute Patrick Mullen equally had the fresher legs for the opposition and looked to have alleviated any worry down south when he slotted over a pont on the verge of full time. But in a dramatic finish the Gaels after hanging in….won ball that saw O’Connor again create a breaking ball that Cian Loy used to offload to Owen Wall who cleverly guided it to the net and force extra time.
O'Loughlin Gaels 2:12 to 1:15 B'hale Shamrocks.
The first period of extra time had both teams trade points early and misses in an understandably nervy 10minutes. A second Evan Walsh (O’Loughlins) point from a sideline being the difference going into the final 10 mins. Billy Leydon added a converted 65 on the restart which was cancelled out by a pointed free from Eoin Cody. Evan Walsh took the last score of the game but there was still time for a final twist perhaps. Ballyhale were awarded a late free outside the 21 yard line but the effort was saved and the Gaels greeted the final whistle with delight and relief
This was a good game with both defences doing their jobs effectively..very little between the attacking units too while both teams showed a great desire to win. The Gaels dug in..and now face Dicksboro in Sunday mornings Final.

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Result: Minor A Hurling League.
Erin's Own 2:17 to 1:18 O'Loughlin Gaels.
The Gaels looked like they had done enough to bag these points but the home side had the final say when taking the last 2 scores of the game (1-1) in the dying moments. Hard luck to all involved

The Minors will face James Stephens next Tuesday evening in the first round of this years hurling championship. Fixture will be updated on club social media and Kilkennygaa.ie.  Please support

SENIOR LEAGUE/CHAMPIONSHIP

O'Loughlin Gaels 2:15 to 0:16 Rower Inistioge.
A decent 2nd half performance helped to build on the 3 point score advantage earned through the first 30mins. Danny Loughnane was alive to a deflected free taken by goal keeper Stephen Murphy in search of his 3rd conversion of the game. This gave the Gaels a bit of distance between the sides that they would not relinquish to the end. Brian Hogan got up to the pace of the game in the second period also and was rewarded with a fine point of his own...and Mark Kelly was introduced late in the game and marked his return with a fine point if his own. Cian Loy continued to be a nuisance for opposition defenders earning a point for his troubles too . The result means O'Loughlins now book themselves into this years league final to be played in a couple of weeks against city rivals James Stephens. Well done to all involved.

JUNIOR B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL SUNDAY

Junior B to Championship Final
OO'Loughlin Gaels 1-7 to 2-18 Graigue Balycallan.
The junior B's succumbed to the might of Graigue-Ballycallan this morning at Nowlan Park in what was billed to be a promising prosepct for our boys. By half time the lads were 1-3 to 0-10 behind with all 4 scores coming from Barry Hogan placed balls. A poor goalkeeping error allowing a long range effort slip into the goal keeping any thoughts of O'Loughlin Gaels triumphing alive. But the second half didnt see much improvement. The first opportunity fell to O'Loughlins but the free was missed and the winners would register a 1-4 before O'Loughlins would hit back with a converted free. A mountain to climb with 20 minutes remaining and the gaels were chasing the game. Another goal was registered within a minute and the game was up. The lads did make a couple attempts at goal but were saved by the keeper and the game would end with O'Loughlins registering just three points from play. It was a huge pity as the result was not at all reflective of the ability and efforts of this team this season. New players were introduced into adult hurling and the club can be satisfied that the conveyor belt is producing. We look forward to seeing lots more for these lads and thank them for huge effort this past few months. Well done all .
Manager: Andy Kearns, Selectors Aidan Fogarty, Luke Leydon. First Aid: Seamus Murphy.

SENIOR LEAGUE/CHAMPIONSHIP

O’Loughlin Gaels 4-17 to 1-10 Erin’s Own
Well done to the senior hurlers who completed 4 out of 4 wins and are safely through to the knockout stages of the championship after a strong win over Erin’s Own last Saturday afternoon. A hatrick of goals by Robbie Buckley helped the boys with a comfortable win and what was a good overall team performance.  The final match of the group will be played on Saturday at St. John’s Park at 5pm and all support is greatly welcomed.  Members are asked to note that this is a Co. Board Fixure and €5 admission applies as normal.

JUNIOR B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL SUNDAY

Junior B to Championship Final
O’Loughlin Gaels 6-12 to 5-8 St. Martins Muckalee
The Junior B Team will compete in this years Championship County Final in a repeat of last months league final pairing when they face Graigue Ballycallan. The earned the right after accounting for St. Martins in the semi-final last Wednesday evening. The game produces eleven goals in total including a hatrick through corner forward Owen Wall. Michael Henebry got the Gaels first goal on 12 mins putting them in the lead at 1-2 to 0-1. Fearghal Brennan would add the second goal soon after and the lads were looking comfortable and the more alert to breaking ball.  IT was a good workmanlike performance that saw Owen Wall net his first of three just before the break leaving the score at half time O’Loughlin Gaels 3-4 to 0-4 St. Martins.  Tervine Wallace got in the groove early in the second half and pointed 2 from play within 3 mins while Barry Hogan converted a free within the same period. St. Martins looked to steal back the deficit however and netted a goal in the next play only for Owen Wall to see that goal with one of his own one minute later.  Scoring opportunities increased for both teams as the game drew to a close and St. Martins hit 3 goals in quick succession to put a wobble on the winners course to victory. Luke Hogan having spurned a couple of earlier opportunities made no mistake with the last score of the game hitting the net and steadying the ship t the final whistle.
A big support please for the final.  Well done to all involved in what has been a great season at this grade.
Team:J Malone, j Lawlor, A Cantwell, B Lawlor, J Kearns, O Murphy (0-1), P Meaney, S Kenny, L Hogan (1-0), M Butler (0-3), J Ryan, B Dowling (0-1), F Brennan (1-2), O Wall (3-0), E Walsh, M Hennebry (1-0), T Wallace (0-3), B Hogan (0-1f)

U13s EXIT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hard luck to both our u13s who were defeated by James Stephens in their respective championships on Saturday at Dicksboro.  The Roinn A match was up first in was a humdinger. O’Loughlin Gaels 2-7 to 1-12 James Stephens
O’Loughlin were well in the game and put serious performances all over the field.  The teams were level with just minutes to go but the winners got the rub of the green and finished out 2 points to the good. In truth this game could have gone either way and we have lots to look forward to with this group.  Well done to two very good teams that did hurling a great service last Saturday morning and each young lad that took to the field should be applauded.

The second game saw James Stephens hit 3-6 to 1-3 but none the less a more competitive game than the scoreline suggested. The boys may have been a little deflated from their comrades earlier defeat but each and every young fella gave it their all for their club. It’s been a great year for this group of lads and a big thanks must go to Joe Daly and his team of selectors for the work put in. Well done all ..lovely hurling.

Roinn A Team: M Bourke Lambert, E Burke, B Wall, J Johnson, T Crowley, R Galwey (Capt) (1-0f), L Quigley, A Maher, L Hanrahan (1-4f), F Lawlor, E Bennett, G Kelly (0-3), E O’Brien, K Waldron, J Hynes.

Roinn C Team: Team: Z Evans, O McKenna, J Bolger (Capt), C Murphy, CJ McChamcheu, K Delaney, JJ Mooney, R Sweeney, H Roberts, D Byrne, D Powell, O Balsys (1-3), E Maher, C Daly, B Little.  E O’Callaghan, C Wall, D Butler, P Phelan, D McCormack, J Tyrell, S Morrissey, J Holohan. Cian Nolan, A Banks, K O’Connor, S Butler.

JUVENILE TEAMS

Well done to the u10s winning the Jimmy Collins Shield at the St. Mary's GAA , Clonmel Tournament on Saturday. The boys beat Erins Own of Cork in the Final on a scoreline if 4-4 to 0-1. Great work being put into these lads all year..a very well deserved piece of silverware.

Graigue Ballycallan 2-13 to 2-15 O’Loughlin Gaels
A good hard fought win against a very strong home side was just reward for a sterling effort by this group of players.  The Gaels were always going to be up against it as Graigue top the table.  With the Gaels finishing second however these sides will meet again in a week or so in a league final.  Well done to all involved.

The u13s bowed out of the Lisdowney 7s at the qtr final stage when they were defested by eventual winners Clara.  The boys did very well winning their first two games handsomely to compete in the prestigious cup competition.  The boys train hard now over the next few weeks to get ready for their championships
