RESULT: Junior Hurling Championship O'Loughlin Gaels 1-19 to 4-13 James Stephens At Palmertown, SUNDAY Sept 25th - Referee : John Bennett With less than ten minutes to go O'Loughlin Gaels looked to be in the driving seat after going on a 1-8 unanswered scoring spree in the second half to turn a 6 point deficit into a healthy 5 point lead. Even though James Stephens did get back a goal and a point, 2 points from Cian Loy and Brian Dowling in the same period should have been enough to finish off the game. The Village were awarded a 21 in the dying moments and Mikey Drennan drilled for goal...a little goalmouth confusion ensued and after some healthy debate the leather was deemed to have crossed the line and the game headed into extra time. Brian Dowling started extra time proceedings off with a pointed free which was added to with two gems..one from Sean Bolger and another from Thomas Gleeson who had a fine game throughout. The Village returned two in the same period and the Gaels went into the second period of extra time one point to the good. The Village got the perfect start however in the Final Act of this drama..a goal by substitute Andrew Parsons was added to with three more points putting the opposition five points ahead with only 4minutes remaining. Even with tired legs the Gaels cut it back to three as they went looking for goals. It was a fair effort..but time ran out and the Village now advance to the Northern Final. Fair play to both teams..only a puck of a ball separated these sides after over 130mins of hurling..good value for supporters but disappointed for our players who put in a huge effort this year. Well done to all involved B. Leydon, B. Murphy, G. Bryan, T. Gleeson, R. Butler, A. O'Brien, N. Bergin, K. O'Brien, P. Cantwell, S. Bolger, A. Geoghegan, B. Dowling, C. Loy, D. Lenihan, J. Doyle, Sunday September 25th at 2pm John Locke Park, Callan - Referee: John Kennedy O'Loughlin Gaels 2-13 to 1-13 Dicksboro Just the tonic before Championship gets underway. A good win over Dicksboro with Mark Kelly getting off the blocks early with 4 points from play (of 5 in total). At the other end of the field goal keeper Stephen Murphy contributed to a fine defensive display with three saves including a fine double reflex saves after a one and one situation with an inrushing forwardat the death that the forced the ball away from the danger area. The ball did make its way back in but the referee spotted the Dicksboro forward waiting in the square and blew for a free out to ensure no extra time would follow. Stephen also added to the score board with a pointed free. Full forward Mark Bergin accounted for 2-6 of the total (1-4 from placed balls), while David Burke added one minor. It was a much needed win as the championship looms. Two weeks to iron out the creases and with James Stephens being the opposition everything must be right. Good work lads..keep it going. Team: S. Bergin(2-6) JUNIORS TO DO IT AGAIN
O’Loughlin Gaels -0-11 to 1-8 James Stephens Sunday Sept. 18th 2016 - Palmerstown, 6pm – Referee Maurice Flynn O’Loughlins/ Village games are always entertaining and this one was certainly no different. The scoring may have been low but that was down to the intensity of the game and some wayward shots by both teams. James Stephens got off to the better start when they went 1-2 to no score up after 6 mins thanks to a Jamie Byrne goal plus a pointed free. Brian Dowling did return a pointed free next before James Stephens added another…the last of their scoring for nearly 20 minutes. O’Loughlins added their points thanks to good midfield work with Paddy Butler enjoying his time there converting two points from play before the break leaving O’Loughlin’s one point adrift at 0-6 to 1-4. The score count was even more rare in the second half but a good entertaining game none the less. Alan Geoghegan , Danny Lenihan and Paddy Butler played well to take hold of their areas and it looked with 10mins to go, after the aforementioned Lenihan scored his second point, that O’Loughlins were in the driving seat two points to the good. But they failed to capitalise on their dominance and James Stephens took a well taken point through Richie Hayes before adding a final pointed free to level the game ensuring both sets of supporters left Palmerstown in good form and ready to go at it again. Well done all ..good hurling. Team: Billy Leydon, B. Murphy, G. Bryan, T. Gleeson, R. Butler, A. O’Brien, N. Bergin, P. Butler (0-2), S. Bolger, A. Geoghegan (0-1), B. Dowling (4pts, 1f), C. Walshe O’Loughlin Gaels 2-13 to 1-18 Ballyhale Shamrocks Saturday Sept 17th 2016 – Thomastown 5pm – referee Owen kenny O’Loughlin Gaels met Ballyhale Shamrocks in the final round of the Senior hurling league on Saturday with both teams knowing they were advancing to the quarter final stages of this year’s championship…the prize at stake a league final spot next weekend. Both defences got a handle on the game making it difficult for forwards to get clear shots at goal. O’Loughlins had the better of the early exchanges with Mark Kelly showing early signs of his form when he hit the post in the 3rd minute..an opportunity that would have put a different perspective on the game had it being converted. Mark went on to score 2-4 from play showing his ability to take scores in tight situations. Ballyhale worked hard off the ball making it difficult to track players and opened up spaces to take their scores and hedaded to the break 0-10 to 0-7 up. Ballyhale pressed on in the second half with points from Henry Sheflin and Eoin Reid who was a handful at centre forward before Mark Kelly returned a point. And although Mark Bergin pointed a free on the 13th minute Eoin Reid broke in for a Ballyhale goal that put them seven points clear with only a quarter of the game remaining. Immediately O’Loughlin Gaels returned two points through a Mark Bergin free and a fine Danny Lenihan strike before Kelly struck for the first of his two goals on the 18th minute. The lead reduced to two but the Shamrocks didn’t flinch and added five points to O’Loughlins one over the next ten minutes requiring O’Loughlins to get goals. Danny Loughnane pointed a free in the dying moments and a good play by Danny Lenihan in the corner sent a low ball to the front of the opposition goal that Mark Kelly was at hand to net in the last play of the game finishing two points adrift when the whistle sounded. An entertaining finish to the game and the lads will now face Dicksboro in the League Shield Final next weekend before the real business of Championship begins in two weeks time. We’re looking forward to it! Team: S. Murphy, A Forristal, A. Kearns, E. Kearns, S. Mahony, B. Hogan, P. Deegan, E. Grant, H. Lawlor, D. Burke, M. Kelly (2-4), D. Loughnane (0-2, 1f), S. Johnston, M.
