O’Loughlin Gaels GAA 1-10 to 1-09 Erin’s Own GAA

A fresh chill in the air and a stiff breeze was the setting for this first round league clash at a well manicured Freshford pitch on last Sunday evening. There was a large O’Loughln Gaels support who travelled in the hope no doubt that their team would hit the ground running and shake off the winter cobwebs. And it looked like that might have been the case but for two goal chances missed in the first 30minutes.
Erin’s own got the scoring off with a point which was quickly countered by a fine mark Kelly point who was already proving to be a handful for the ‘Comer boys. Mark in truth was a handful all through the first half and had registered 1-2 before the break. The goal coming from a fine pick up after a good delivery that saw Mark weave his way at speed towards the goal and clinically finish it to the net on eighteen minutes at a point in the game where O’loughlins dominance needed to be seen on the scoreboard. The score looking a more respectable 1-3 to 0-2. Immediately though the ‘Comer lads responded with a goal of their own and when added a further point two minutes later the teams were level and O’Loughlins looked like they might rue not capitalising on their best period. But from this point to the half O’Loughlins notched up a further four points from Mark Bergin (2 65’s , 1 free and a point from play). Four points up at half time made for a nervous St. John’s support as they headed into the second half to play against a stiff breeze and needed to hurl well to maintain the lead. Half time score 1-7 – 1-3
The second half saw ‘Comer’s best player Conor Fogarty deployed to marshal Mark Kelly. In doing a job on that Erin’s own attack was starved of any decent ball and the O’Loughlin Gaels backs took to seeing the game out. Andy Kearns, Huw Lawlor and Paddy Deegan were in complete control and Davey Burke and Mark Bergin worked hard to stifle any decent assault on the O’loughlins goal area. Eoin Grant resumed the scoring with a fine point one minute into the restart before Erin’s own began clawing back the lead with a series of long range efforts. In fact ‘Comer returned three points before Mark Bergin had an opportunity to return one of his own from a free on fourteen minutes. He followed up with another one four minutes later and O’Loughlins would fail to score for the remainder of the game. Erin’s own threw over a further three and were unlucky not the get the equaliser before the final whistle sounded. Fortunately it did and O’Loughlin Gaels get the first league points for the campaign.
It was a job done but plenty of improvement will be needed as the league campaign continues. Next up will be County Champions Clara and the ‘Gaels will want to be in their full health for that one. Good work and well done.
