Our senior players made their league debut in St John’s Park against Mullinavat on Saturday last. The Continent went down by two points to the ‘Vat (1-06 to 0-07). Those who attended waited with bated breath to see which OLG player would go down as the first in the club’s history to receive the dreaded black card. This reporter chatted with referee John Guinan and was impressed with his pragmatic approach. John explained that the card would be issued, should a player commit any of the following indiscretions: deliberate pull down, body check or foot trip of an opponent. The card could also be shown for verbal abuse of an opponent, team mate or an official. A black card means instant dismissal for the player, with a replacement being allowed, provided that team incurs no more than three black cards in the game. John wisely kept the card firmly in his pocket and the players from both teams duly obliged by playing the game in the spirit in which it is meant.
