SCHOOL YARD SUMMER HURLING FINALS
Throughout the Summer on Tuesday evenings St. Johns Park hosted a campaign of School Yard Hurling where the club facilitated young boys to come together from u10s to u12s to play some honest to god hurling! Teams would be made on the night, a mentor would referee and the sliotar thrown in for an hours top class hurling each week. On Sunday the campaign came to an end with a Finals Blitz where teams were divided into four..Teams Dumore, The Continent, St. John’s and Johnswell went at it for almost two hours with a round robin league that divided them into two separated finals. The hurling was brilliant..u10s relishing at the prospect of challenging their older counterparts and scores registering from all angles. The players took control..organised positions, argued over decisions and directed each other to do better or ‘mark yer man’ in a healthy old fashioned school yard way. There were disagreements, there new partnerships discovered, and maybe even the mentors found out a little more about what some of our players are capable of doing – not maybe – definitely! By what we all saw on Sunday you can safely assume that this lot will develop nicely. For the record Team St. Johns’ were the Cup Winners after a rip roaring affair with Team Johnswell narrowly winning by two points. The shield final between The Continent and Dunmore went to extra time and saw Dumore just edge it by a single point. Well done all…lovely hurling.
