U8’s Camogie Blitz

The O'Loughlins U8s Camogie hosted their summer blitz in St. Johns Park on Saturday morning.  On two pitches, four teams played a series of three matches each with a large contingent of supporters cheering on the girls. It would normally be difficult to play Camogie under such balmy conditions but not these girls. Every ball was contested and gingerly moved up the field into attack.

First up was city neighbours Dicksboro. This was an excellent encounter with some powerful performances by both teams. Orlaith Duncan, Siofra O'Leary and Sheena O'Keefe steadied the ship from midfield with some excellent play, Hazel Slattery kept her cool while net minding in the first half while her replacement Rachel Waldron pulled off what was arguably the save of the day in the second half. Forwards Marie Culleton, Ena Lawlor and Amy Lawless all worked well with some excellent interlink play. Emma Power and Emma Dillon were very busy in defence and their excellent work rate was the platform for an overall great team performance

Next up for the challenge was St. Martins. The O'Loughlins girls got stuck in straight away with some excellent blocking and tackling by the aforementioned Orlaith Duncan. Siofra O'Leary moved into defence and was kept very busy by a strong St.Martin's attack but ably assisted by Lauren Conway and Nicole Galvin the managed to keep the ball away from Rachael Waldrons net very effectively. Good delivery through midfielders Caoimhe Ryan and Sarah Fitzgerald meant that the forwards could do damage to the St. Martins defence up front. Rosa Phelan got herself on the score sheet as too did Ena Lawlor to cap a fine days work by these girls. Aoife Ryan, Amy Lawless and Marie Culleton were relentless and the eagerness to play for the team was epitomised by Marie Culletons willingness to continue even after getting a bad knock on the hand. The game ended in a draw which was a fair result as both teams gave 100%. Well done to both teams

The final match for the O'Loughlins girls was against Clara. Again the girls carried the momentum from their earlier games and powered into an early lead with well taken goals by Ena Lawlor after some excellent collaboration by the O'Loughlins forwards, Amy Lawless, Marie Culleton and Lauren Conway. Caoimhe Ryan, Orlaith Duncan and the two Emma's, Power and Dillon, were excellent throughout the day. Rachael Waldron continued between the sticks with an efficient display while Siofra O'Leary was again very solid. Hazel Slattery, Rosa Phelan and Sheena O'Keefe were super and Sarah Fitzgerald gave a powerful performance from midfield. Nicole Galvin Aoife Ryan and Amy Lawless all made their mark on the day. This was a fine team performance resulting in the best result possible for these girls. Their progress through the summer is very evident by their improved performances. A big thanks to coaches Monica Kearns and Helen Phelan and their team for their work with the girls.

The blitz was a resounding success which didn't go unnoticed by the words of gratitude expressed by the visiting teams and mentors from Clara and Dicksboro Camogie clubs. A big word of thanks to St. Martins too for their contribution to the days events. The girls continue training on Monday evenings at 6.30pm. Well done to all the girls today and keep up the good work.

U12’s Go Games

O’Loughlin Gaels Under 12’s played host to three talented outfits on Saturday last. Carrickshock and Mullinavat arrived to St John’s Park early on Saturday morning and both gave very good accounts of themselves against our boys. This reporter “threw in the ball” in the ‘Vat game and was impressed with the way the southerners moved the ball quickly from defence to attack. OLG also had star performers in both games and learned a lot from the experience. Mullinavat manager (All-Ireland winning captain – Willie O’Connor) was delighted with the game. This reporter  went to give Willie an update of the score at half time but he was more concerned with the players from both teams enjoying themselves and getting as much game time as possible. City rivals Dicksboro then arrived to take on the St John’s Parish boys. A classic encounter of ebb and flow hurling ensued with both teams trading punch and counter punch. The ‘Boro won the first half but OLG came back at them in the second twenty, to claim a narrow victory. In truth though, it was Hurling that was the real winner.

OLG U12’s Panel: Killian Larkin, Harry Bland, Daniel Walsh, Alex Molloy, Jake Hickey, Matthew Hogan, Declan Murphy, Greg Edogun, Mikey Wallace, Clinton Morris, Vincent O’Grady, Joseph Leydon, Chase Leefar, Luke Hennessy, Aidan Kenny, Sean Lawlor, Morgan Leefar, Sam O’Connell, Eric Walsh, Josh Nolan, Jack Clifford, James Phelan, Joe Brennan, Nick Mullins, Damien Dowling.

World War One – Kilkenny’s Fallen

We take this opportunity to remind you of the Centenary Memorial Mass commemorating the thousands of people from Kilkenny City and County who left home and family to participate in the ‘Great War’, 1914 – 1918, and to pray for the hundreds who never returned home alive.
Mr Paddy Neary, Wolfe Tone Street, will present a paper on “Kilkenny’s Involvement” during this memorial. A wreath in honour of those who perished will be jointly laid by Bishop Seamus Freeman SAC, Bishop of Ossory, and Mr Andrew McGuinness, Mayor of Kilkenny. Thukolo Gospel Choir will provide music and song for the liturgy. We invite people from all across the City and County: lay religious and clergy, to join in this Centenary Memorial Mass on Wednesday at 7.30 pm. You are invited to refreshments in the Parish Centre afterwards.

Dog Night

A bumper crowd made their way to James’s Park on Friday night last for the annual O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club Benefit Night of Greyhound Racing. The McCarthy family (Eurospar) were our special guests. Eurospar has been a loyal friend to OLG over the years and we thank them for their continued support. George Candler’s dulcet tones rang out across the tannoy throughout the night and kept proceedings moving along. Messrs Cullen & Croghan served up American style Hot Dogs to the children of St John’s Parish while the races proceeded apace behind them. This reporter bumped into many members – too numerous to mention and was amazed at the variety of ways punters went about trying to select that elusive winning dog. Some simply picked a number between one and six. Others were more scientific however & deployed a strategy that involved “studying form” and analysing “track record”. One well known female member told this reporter she had to eye the beast from top to tail before deciding if he was for her or not. What a pity she hadn’t applied those selection criteria – when she got hitched all those years ago – to yer man beside her!

Eddie Buckley (Chairman OLG) took to the microphone and sincerely thanked our sponsors and all those involved in making the night possible – particularly Ben Fogarty and his team. Eddie signed off by wishing Aidan Fogarty and his seniors the very best for the remainder of the season. The evening was moving along effortlessly at this stage and as night began to descend on the track – we were treated to the main event – the final race. Race ten had the much fancied Tearaway La running in trap one. Tearaway La’s owner is none other than Richie Moylan of OLG. The omens were good. Those who place the “pin on the page” seemed to opt for him as did the more seasoned and scientific punters. Even the aforementioned beast surveyor told this reporter “she liked what she was seeing” and placed the last of her hard earned on Tearaway La. Moylan’s animal duly obliged and the biggest roar of the night could be heard all around St Canices’ Parish, as Tearaway La brought home the bacon. We look forward to seeing you all again this time next year in James’s Park – mark the date in your diary now.

There was no winner of this week’s club lotto. The numbers drawn were: 1, 11, 19, 28 and the bonus number was 12. To be in with a chance to win €20,000 – please buy a ticket form any of our registered sellers or call to the clubhouse bar.

Youth 2000

Youth 2000 Summer Festival, Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary from Thursday 14th – Sunday 17th August.  For young people aged 16-35, an opportunity not to be missed to experience the Catholic faith and meet many new people.
This Festival has been nicknamed the “Holy Oxygen” with over 1000 young people from all corners of Ireland attending last year.  The festival is donation only.  Free buses available from towns throughout Ireland.  For more information and to book online see www.youth2000.ie or phone 01 6753690.

Who Were They?

A number of weeks ago we circulated an old photograph of a St John’s Parish based team and asked people to make contact with us regarding the personnel in the picture. This reporter is happy to say we got a very positive response. The team pic relates to O’Loughlins Hurling Club and was taken in 1923. O’Loughlin Gaels would like to thank the following for their help: Jim Rushe, John Joe Cullen, Billy Sullivan, Conor Denieffe and Eamon Doyle. The picture itself can be viewed on our website: www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie and simply go to The Continent >>> Dunmore & Johnswell.

Back Row (standing) L to R: Tom J Bergin (Johnstown), Jack Howley (Mooncoin), Jack Shea

Second Row (also standing): John Jackman (Chairman, John Street), Tom Doherty (USA), Andy Phelan, Paddy Murray (Wolfe Tone Street), John Rice C.C. (President), Dick Comerford (John Street), John Talbot, Martin Madigan, Joe Timmins (Secretary & Treasurer),

Seated: Tom Talbot, James Kavanagh (England), Mick Walsh, Arthur Rushe, Jim McEvoy (Dunmore), Paddy Fahy (Wolfe Tone Street),

Sitting: Tom Wyse (Maudlin St & England), Alfie Rushe, Bill Murphy (Michael Street)

This reporter believes this team played and trained in an area known as the Asylum Flats on the banks of the River Nore.  We can also confirm the following pieces of information concerning some of the team members. Tom J Bergin was a former Chairman of the Northern County Board. Jack Shea went on to be a high profile athlete and was originally from the south of the county. John Jackman was known as “Jacksie”. He was a founder member of a re-incarnation of this team known as St John’s in the 1930’s. Andy Phelan was the groundsman in St John’s Church for many years. Martin Madigan was known to his friends as “Junie”. Joe Timmins was a founding member of O’Loughlins Hurling Club and was also Town Clerk. Tom Talbot (brother of John) took up athletics when he finished hurling and would become a county champion long distance runner. Arthur Rushe is a very important link between this team and the present day O’Loughlin Gaels Club as we know it. Arthur was a founder member of OLG in 1969. He was treasurer and selector 1969 to 1975 and indeed a special “This Is Your Life” style commemoration of his achievements was held for him in the club in 1975. Jim McEvoy was an uncle of Billy Sullivan. Jim was a mechanic and was also a dab hand at the cards. He emigrated to Canada.  Alfie Rushe (brother of Arthur) went on to be a successful chemist in Templemore. Bill Murphy was known to his friends as Galtee. He managed the Royal Liver at John’s Bridge for many years and his son J.D. was also well known in the financial and sporting life of the city.

One ten Euro ticket will get you admission to Kilkenny Dog Track as well as your own race card for the night. First prize is a holiday for two in Spain. There also four runner-up cash prizes up for grabs. Best of luck and have a lovely night out in St James’s Park.

S.H.L. Round Four

O’Loughlin Gaels travelled to Ballyhale on Sunday last for round four of their Group A clash with Carrickshock. A fourth consecutive win for the City boys would surely propel them into a championship quarter final – where every club wants to be. Four goals either side of half time were to prove crucial in the end and the Continent ran out winners in the end, with a little to spare. Full time: O’Loughlin Gaels 5-17, Carrickshock 1-13. A full match report can be read in the sports section of this paper. If you would also like to check out the OLG match report – please log on to our website www.oloughlingaels.gaa.ie and then go to Team News >>> Mens Teams >>> Senior.

U14’s Tournament

A unique tournament was held in St John’s Park over the last two consecutive Saturdays. Its aim was simple – to develop up and coming U14 players from across the county, by providing them with as much game time as possible – in a competitive tournament environment. The tourney was the brainchild of OLG stalwart - John Sheridan. John was aided and abetted by the other members of the organizing committee – Niall Bergin, Eoghan Croghan, Ben Fogarty, Brendan O’Leary, and Donal Higgins. Twelve clubs from both city and county entered the tourney. What was unique about this competition was that the teams were made up of players who ply their trades in Roinns B & C. The twelve clubs were as follows: St Martin’s (Muckalee), James Stephens, Emeralds (Urlingford), Kilmacow, Rower-Inistioge, Conahy Shamrocks, Windgap, Dicksboro, Tullogher-Rosbercon, Barrow Rangers (Paulstown), Carrickshock and of course....O’Loughlin Gaels.

The tourney was the brainchild of OLG stalwart - John Sheridan. This reporter managed to catch up with John, while he was grabbing a quick cuppa in the splendid new clubhouse kitchen. John explained that the club was hosting a twelve club tournament over two successive Saturdays. He was quick to point out also that he had been given great help from the organizing committee – Niall Bergin, Eoghan Croghan, Ben Fogarty, Brendan O’Leary, and Donal Higgins. Twelve clubs from both city and county have entered the tourney. This reporter attended several of Saturday’s games – the pick of them being a tight tussle between the Continent and Windgap. All the skills were on display in this enthralling encounter - tight defending, hard tackling, long range points and spectacular goals. Each of the twelve teams played two group games last Saturday. The beauty of this tournament is that they will each contest a further two games (semi-final & final) next Saturday, regardless of their group standings from the previous week. O’Loughlin Gaels would like to sincerely thank all those involved in putting this tournament together and would also like to wish each team the very best on Saturday July 12th in St John’s Park.

Leinster Champions

O'Loughlin Gaels would like to congratulate four of our finest, who are all Leinster Hurling Champions for 2014. Ross Butler & Gary Bryan were part of the victorious minor team that defeated the Dubs in a comprehensive display today. Ross commanded the forty well and also scored a great point in the first half of the minor final. Brian Hogan & Mark Kelly each played major roles in this year's successful senior campaign. Brian commanded the half back line with authority and seemed to say "this far and no further" to the Dubs forward line. One of the scores of the game was a combo move: a Tyrrell / Hogan / Hogan / Power play of a point. To cap it all off, Brian then scored what can only be described as an "Ethiad Skyline" of a point in the thirty-second minute of the first half - that surely was the beginning of the end for the Dubs.
