O’Loughlin Gaels GAA 4-17 to 0-10 James Stephens GAA Venue: St. Johns Park, 26th of March 2016 at 3pm Referee: Stephen Delaney O’Loughlin Gaels were well deserving of this victory with a scoreline that tells it’s own story. A fitter and more focused O’Loughlins Team all looked eager to get on the ball. The Village did start better taking a two point lead before Brian Dowling pointed his first placed ball (65) after 8mins. He added three more from play soon after before Danny Lenihen finished to the net for the team’s first goal on 17 minutes. The Gaels had settled well into the game now and although James Stephens pulled back a few scores O’Loughlin kept pressing and added to their own tally heading into the break 1-7 to 0-6 in front. The second half saw O’Loughlin Gaels drive on with a combination of fitter bodies and a strong wind. A good blend of experienced players and younger players helped this side finish out the second half comfortably. Ross Butler and Alan Geoghegan laid the platform for many an attack and Niall Bergin’s and Paddy Cantwell’s workrates in the half back line was rewarded with a point each of their own. Brian Dowling finished his day with a scoreline of 2-8 (5f) and Daniel O’Connor (3pts) and Gary Kelly (1pt) were both causing problems for the James Stephen’s defence. The scores came from all round the field but it was goals that broke the resolve of the opposition to send the home support away in good spirits. First round points in this All-County league gets the adult season off to positive start. Well done everybody. Team: B. Leydon, J. Lawlor, R. Leydon, D. O’Driscoll, P. Cantwell, N. Bergin, R. Gibbons. Result from tonight's JHL from St. Johns Prk O'Loughlin Gaels 0-17 to 0-8 The Village Good result for our Junior Hurlers tonight. By far the better team they dominated for all of the game. Andy Cantwell took the reins from the back and youngsters Gary Bryan , Daniel O'Connor and Huw Lawlor all had suberb games. At 8 pts to 6 at half time O'Loughlins should have been out of site only for a few mis-directed efforts but the second half saw the lads resume their dominance and see a bit more accuracy in front of the posts. Danby Bolger and Shane O'Mahony adding a couple of beauts. O'Loughlin Gaels scored 9pts in total in the second half to James Stephens 3pts (2f) from their best player on the night Jamie Byrne. The boys won't be bothered too much about the ease of tonights result but will be glad to bag the points. Well done O'Loughlins. O'Loughlins. 3.10 - 1.11 Graiguenamanagh Goals from Danny Bolger, Sheamie Cummins and Billy Leydon (f) helped to secure valuable points for the home side this evening in front of a reasonable crowd. Well done

O’Loughlin Gaels GAA 5-17 to 2-14 St. Martins GAA Venue: St. Johns Park, Saturday April 4th, 6pm Referee: Peter Burke. St. Johns Park was the venue for this first round encounter between O’Loughlin Gaels GAA & St. Martins in the Junior Hurling League. A bright spring evening provided the backdrop for an entertaining game of hurling between these two sides. O’Loughlins got on the score sheet early via a Paddy Cantwell point from play after some good work by midfielder Shane Parsons. That was quickly trumped by an excellent goal from St. Martins half back Adrien Farrell. The game certainly started brightly and St. Martins full forwarded Robert Shore, who caused many headaches for the O’Loughlins defence all evening, drew and excellent save from goal keeper Billy Leydon on the 6th minute parrying over the line for a 65 which was converted by Shane Kinsella. Brian Dowling who had an excellent game for O’Loughlins, pointed a free soon after to be followed up by another point from St. Martin full forward Robbie Shore. O’Loughlin Gaels gathered a bit of momentum now as midfielder Shane Parsons along with Martin Gibbons and Brian Dowling took hold of the game for a period allowing O’Loughlins to hit a purple patch and scored 1-5 without reply including a well worked goal from Danny Lenihan. O’Loughlins looked like they were in the driving seat now with Rick Leydon and Huw Lawlor dominating things throughout this period but St. Martins upped the pace in the full forward line with Robbie Shore and Shane Kinsella creating the chances to add another 5 points before half time along with an excellent score form centre forward Pauric Haughney who was battling hard. However good work from Gary Bryan (O’Loughlins) at mid-field to feed Paddy Cantwell, dissecting the St. Martin defence before offloading to centre forward Martin Gibbons and finished the move to the net, keeping a healthy four point advantage for O’Loughlins at half time (2-10 to 1-9) The second half started well for St. Martins as Shane Kinsella pointed twice (one free) before full forward won a penalty after being pulled down in the square. Jason Shore took responsibility for this one and rifled it to the net to put St. Martin one point ahead within 4 minutes of the restart. O’Loughlin’s wing forward Paddy Cantwell was finding form now and made two more defence splitting runs hitting the crossbar on his first but making no mistake on his second finding the net again. Brian Dowling (O’Loughlins) pointed either side of that goal with the latter point arguable the score of the match with a beauty from 70 yards. Two more points from St. Martins’ Robbie shore and Shane Kinsella kept the game alive. Danny Bolger fetched a ball from a Gary Bryan worked clearance and engineered a one handed strike to the net to ease the nerves of the St. Johns supporters. From here on in O’Loughlins drove for home. O’Loughlins corner back Alan O’Brien was dogged in defence and with some heroic blocking, launched an attack on the St. Martins goal resulting in Danny Lenihan splitting the defence and striking for goal. A few more points from Brian Dowling, Martin Gibbons and one from substitute Ross Butler put the game out of sight, with the final score coming from St. Martins talisman, Shane Kinsella. Ballyragget under lights was the unique Sunday night setting for the keenly awaited city derby in this Section B final of the J.H.C. When the Continent and the Village collide – there’s sure to be fireworks and this occasion proved to be no different. In the end – An Alan Geoghegan master class would be the difference between the teams.
Paddy Cantwell got in an early block to signal intent but Conor McQuillan and Eoin McCormack of James Stephens were to get the first two scores of the game. The same Paddy Cantwell struck a beauty from the sideline to reduce the deficit to a single point. Alan Geoghegan’s equalizer was a cracker off his left and was a portent of things to come. Brian Murphy looked solid around his own house and rose high to take one from the floodlit sky. Huw Lawlor also emerged from his defence twice in as many minutes to clear OLG lines. Martin Gibbons won possession around the middle and quickly found Brian Dowling who struck to put O’Loughlins in the lead for the first time – on twelve minutes. The Village hit back however with a double of their own to once again take the narrowest of leads. Padraig Meany was prominent at this point and could be seen mopping up an amount of ball. Danny Bolger struck the equalizer on seventeen minutes on the back of some neat Daniel DOC O’Connor work. The game was interrupted at this point by a good old schmozzle - both teams wanted this one badly. Danny Bolger found Alan Geoghegan who fired a miracle shot from the sideline over the black spot – whatta score! The Village were not to be outdone however and finished the half with four fine points of their own (McQuillan bagging two more). Ricky Leydon battened down the hatches in defence with a superb catch and clearance and OLG added two more points to their tally – a Geoghegan free and a Danny Lenihan special to end the half one point adrift. H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 0-07, James Stephens 0-08 An Eoin McCormack free stretched the Village’s lead to two points before OLG hit three on the spin. Two in a row from Danny Lenihan (both from narrow angles) and a neat Brian Dowling point once again, put The Continent out in front. The see-saw nature of the game was to continue – with the Village once more wrestling back the advantage with two unanswered points. But cometh the hour..............that man Alan Geoghegan fired the leveller on eighteen minutes. Then, came the decisive score of the game. Danny Bolger cracked his shot off the crossbar and Paddy Cantwell followed up the rebound to pull hard for a precious three pointer. The Village were not done yet and added four more points but Alan Geoghegan would strike two beauties (one from a free and one from play) to ensure OLG would run out two point winners of this highly entertaining game. F/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 1-13, James Stephens 0-14 Sammy Johnston, Alan O’Brien, Brian Murphy, Andy Cantwell, Huw Lawlor, Ricky Leydon, Padraig Meany, Vinny Wallace, Martin Gibbons, Alan Geoghegan 0-6 (2f’s), Paddy Cantwell 1-1, Daniel O’Connor, Danny Bolger 0-1, Brian Dowling 0-2, Danny Lenihan 0-3, Subs Used: Sheamie Cummins The magnificent James Stephens complex of pitches on the Kells Road was the setting for an uncharacteristically flat OLG performance, on Saturday evening last. The Continent took on their city rivals Dicksboro in this second round, Junior Championship match. Sammy Johnston was tested early with a high ball in around the house, but coped admirably and was awarded a free for his efforts. With two minutes on the clock, the boys from St Canice’s Parish opened proceedings, before Alan Geoghegan equalized from a free awarded on the back of some Danny Bolger hard graft. Young Shane O’Brien (‘Boro) had two early goal chances but missed narrowly on both occasions – OLG were getting stretched at the back and too much of the game was being played in the Continent’s half. Huw Lawlor made a great catch and clearance as do-or-die defending became the order of the day. Paddy Cantwell struck a wide but did not let that deter him. Moments later, he was on the ball again (thanks to a brilliant Paddy Deegan pass) and struck straight and true to level matters at two points apiece. The O’Loughlins defence however was coming under increasing pressure – Alan O’Brien chipped in with a wonder catch and a one handed clearance for the cause. Both Cantwells set up the next OLG score. Andy’s hard work released Paddy for a great point. PC’s two on the trot helped OLG into a one point lead. But still the defence was being tested – Brian Murphy made a great catch and clearance. Ricky Leydon also pulled one from the clouds and released Paddy Deegan to clear OLG’s lines. Wily veteran Alan Geoghegan won possession and a free under the posts – which he duly converted to restore the one point advantage. The same Alan Geoghegan would tag on two more points to bring this low scoring opening half to a close. H/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 0-06, Dicksboro 0-05 It was no surprise that changes were made and the second half saw the introduction of Daniel O’Connor, Ben Leydon, Fergal Brennan and Vinny Wallace. Each played his part in a Continent revival of sorts but in truth it was to be the DOC substitution that would prove most decisive of all. No sooner was Daniel on the pitch; than he was on the end of a precision Danny Lenihan pass. DOC struck high and handsome between the posts to raise a white flag and give the St John’s Parish Boys a two point lead and some much needed momentum. The ‘Boro were not for giving up easily however and struck a brace of their own to level matters –both Eddie O’Donoghue & Owen Gough continually catching the eye. John Doyle and Paddy Deegan combined well five minutes into the second half – Deegan’s shot raised his first white flag of the day. Paddy’s midfield partner – Martin Gibbons then got in on the act with a lovely point of his own, to once again put two points between the teams. John Doyle then got on the end of a beautifully drilled Ricky Leydon crossfield ball and applied the finish the pass deserved. But this was not before the ‘Bro hit a brace to keep the minimum between the teams again, in this tight encounter. Somehow, O’Loughlins managed to keep their noses in front. Alan Geoghegan hit three on the trot and Paddy Cantwell was unlucky to see his ground pull goal effort, go narrowly wide. Fittingly though, it was the defence and replacements who deserved the plaudits in this game. With minutes to go – Andy Cantwell made a surge out of his own defence. Knowing he couldn’t catch the ball a second time, he booted it away to the cheers of the Continent’s faithful. The Doc O’Connor stamped All-Ireland minor class on proceedings with a bone crunching shoulder followed by a mighty catch, which would set up a Geoghegan pointed free to increase the margin to two near the hour’s end. Paddy Deegan scored his second and OLG’s last point of the game, on the back of Danny Bolger’s spade work. The ’Boro battled bravely and added two points late in the day but ran out of luck and time. O’Loughlins march on knowing they will need to improve if they are to remain in this prestigious Championship. F/T: O’Loughlin Gaels 0-14, Dicksboro 0-13 Sammy Johnston, Alan O’Brien, Brian Murphy, Andy Cantwell, Huw Lawlor, Rick Leydon, Padraig Meaney, Paddy Deegan 0-2, Martin Gibbons 0-1, Danny Bolger, Alan Geoghegan 0-7 (6 f’s), Paddy Cantwell 0-2, John Doyle 0-1, James Lenihan, Danny Lenihan Subs used: Daniel O’Connor 0-1, Ben Leydon, Fergal Brennan, Vinny Wallace O’Loughlin Gaels juniors were handed the tricky assignment of taking on Erin’s Own in Jenkinstown on Saturday last. This JHC, Section B, first round encounter saw two fine teams battling it out, on an unseasonably warm September day. Martin Gibbons signalled intent from the whistle with an immediate charge down and block. The loose ball was received gratefully by Paddy Cantwell, who duly raised a white flag for The Continent’s opening score. Comer’s Eoin Meally (who would impress throughout the hour) sent an equalizing free thar an trasnan with three minutes on the clock. John Doyle moments later, proceeded on a slalom run through the heart of the Erin’s Own defence before firing between the uprights to restore the one point advantage. Comer then wrestled that advantage away by scoring three unanswered points of their own. The crowd sensed instantly that this was going to be hard fought and hard won. Danny Lenihan struck a wonder score off his left from the Jenkinstown side of the pitch but yet again – Erin’s Own hit three on the trot, in what was a dominant period of the game for the boys in blue. The St John’s Parish Boys sensed the half was beginning to slip away from them but responded in fine style. Alan O’Brien sounded the rallying cry from the heart of the defence. Despite being tied up, he averted imminent danger by kicking the ball away from trouble. The forwards seemed to take inspiration from this do or die defending. A combination move which saw Paddy Deegan find John Doyle; who in turn released Danny Lenihan - would reduce the deficit to a single point. Young Huw Lawlor could be seen scrapping for every ball in the middle of the field. An illegal full frontal charge which sent Huw momentarily into his own dugout could have signalled the end of his day’s hurling. But Huw was up and about almost immediately – giving every bit as good as he was getting for the cause. Three consecutive OLG wides preceded a Paddy Cantwell white flag in the twenty-first minute to level matters yet again. One of the scores of the game was then to follow – Andy Cantwell struck deep from his own half – whatta way to take the lead! OLG then made this period of dominance tell on the scoreboard. James Lenihan found himself in space in front of goal and slid his shot neatly home to raise the green for the first goal of the game. Alan Geoghegan then pointed a free to bring matters to a close for the opening thirty. H/T O’Loughlin Gaels: 1-09, Erin’s Own: 0-08 The second half saw the introduction of Daniel O’Connor and Danny Bolger. Alan O’Brien put in a superb block to thwart a Comer attack and concede a sixty-five, almost straight from the throw-in. But lightning was then to strike twice for the Erin’s Own defence, as that man James Lenihan yet again rattled the net in a decisive strike for home. The lead was now seven and the men from The Marble City were in the ascendancy. Sammy Johnston sent a laser beam of a puck out into the left hand of Alan Geoghegan. Geoghegan then fed Gibbons for one of the scores of the game – now the lead was eight. Two great catches were to follow by Paddys - Deegan & Cantwell (the latter converting his fetch into a lovely point from play). Martin Gibbons also got in on the act with another point of his own. Incredibly though, it would be all of fifteen minutes before the Continent would score again. Erin’s Own took over completely and struck a goal and seven points without reply! The game was once again in the melting pot and cool heads were called for. Brian Murphy stood tall in the OLG defence and made a crucial intervention. He cleared his lines a la Brick Walsh by batting the ball away. The experienced Alan Geoghegan also showed his class in the closing minutes of this tight tussle by striking a wonder score. This was seen and raised by Paddy Cantwell in the last minute of the game, to give OLG a hard fought two point win. F/T O’Loughlin Gaels 2-14, Erin’s Own 1-15 Sammy Johnston, Kevin O’Brien, Brian Murphy, Alan O’Brien, Andy Cantwell, Rick Leydon, Padraic Meaney, Paddy Deegan, Huw Lawlor, Paddy Cantwell (0-4), Martin Gibbons (0-1), A Geoghegan (0-5, 4f’s), John Doyle (0-2), James Lenihan (2-0), Danny Lenihan (0-2), Subs used: Daniel O’Connor & Danny Bolger After a slow start when OLG were quickly down a goal and a point to no score, the team gradually got a grip on the game. In a man of the match performance by Alan Geoghegan, which saw the veteran personally bridge a twenty year gap to again win the Northern Junior Hurling Championship.
OLG had a number of goal scoring chances with Danny Bolger going closest on two occasions. It was only when the Blacks & Whites goalkeeper made a positional error, over committing himself in no man’s land, that John Doyle seized the chance to finish to an open net. All through the match the OLG backs played well, ably led by their Captain - Brian Murphy. The half back line of Paddy Deegan, Rick Leydon and Padraig Meaney raised their game at a time early in the second half when OLG suddenly found themselves down by 2 points. The Blacks & Whites centre forward Niall Kennedy gave a really fine display and finished the game having scored 6 points, 3 of which came from frees. Half time score OLG 1-08 Blacks & Whites 1-07 All evening, the OLG midfield partnership of Brian Dowling and Martin Gibbons worked extremely hard. Dowling showed his quality scoring skills and finishing the game with 2 points. Martin Gibbons further embellished his reputation as one of the Club's hardest working players - a role greatly valued by his fellow team members. As the game entered the dying minutes, OLG gradually gained a 3 point lead. However Blacks & Whites fired a rasping last minute goal bound shot which was deflected over the bar by the ever safe Sammy Johnston in goal. All spectators agreed that this was an exciting and sporting game played by two very honest teams. A special thanks to team Manager Philly Holohan and two selectors Paul Phelan and Philly Twomey, who have been doing super work with the team. Best wishes to Sheamie Cummins who picked up a bad ankle injury on the night.
