After a slow start when OLG were quickly down a goal and a point to no score, the team gradually got a grip on the game. In a man of the match performance by Alan Geoghegan, which saw the veteran personally bridge a twenty year gap to again win the Northern Junior Hurling Championship.
OLG had a number of goal scoring chances with Danny Bolger going closest on two occasions. It was only when the Blacks & Whites goalkeeper made a positional error, over committing himself in no man’s land, that John Doyle seized the chance to finish to an open net. All through the match the OLG backs played well, ably led by their Captain - Brian Murphy. The half back line of Paddy Deegan, Rick Leydon and Padraig Meaney raised their game at a time early in the second half when OLG suddenly found themselves down by 2 points. The Blacks & Whites centre forward Niall Kennedy gave a really fine display and finished the game having scored 6 points, 3 of which came from frees.
Half time score OLG 1-08 Blacks & Whites 1-07
All evening, the OLG midfield partnership of Brian Dowling and Martin Gibbons worked extremely hard. Dowling showed his quality scoring skills and finishing the game with 2 points. Martin Gibbons further embellished his reputation as one of the Club's hardest working players - a role greatly valued by his fellow team members.
As the game entered the dying minutes, OLG gradually gained a 3 point lead. However Blacks & Whites fired a rasping last minute goal bound shot which was deflected over the bar by the ever safe Sammy Johnston in goal. All spectators agreed that this was an exciting and sporting game played by two very honest teams. A special thanks to team Manager Philly Holohan and two selectors Paul Phelan and Philly Twomey, who have been doing super work with the team. Best wishes to Sheamie Cummins who picked up a bad ankle injury on the night.
