This is a short extract from a piece on the 1979 Football County Final between Ballyhale Shamrocks and O'Loughlin Gaels as reported in "The Kilkenny Standard" 15th March 1980. (look at the dates - some thing's never change!…)
It wasn't a good day for the St. Johns men who were on the wrong end of a drubbing by a Fennelly-laden 'Shamrocks team. The reporter was not so kind either as you can see in this paragraph showing his blatant favour for the winners highlighted by the sarcastic tones set out in his use of inverted comas. However I'd say there's a few of our current players glad that this guy is not reporting today!!! For the record Ballyhale won the game 0-12 to 0-04 completing the double of county titles for that year.
Thanks again to Damien O'Connell who needs to get back to St. John's Park soon or he'll have everything cleared out of his house.
